just trying to get the general wisdom as to the likelihood of getting body panels for the chassis of a GT4 that I am currently parting out

Are there body kits to do this ?

Would it be worth the trouble ?

Would it qualify for any racing category ?

While there are bodykits for the 308GTB (or GTS) they are made for the 2340 mm wheelbase of the 308GTB/S, while the GTO has 2450. That said, the 308GT4 has 2550 mm or 100 mm more than a GTO. You could make a proper GTO lookalike by shortening the wheelbase and adapting a 308GTB bodykit, then you would also need GTB windscreen and pillars, doors, roof, rear window, lights, dash, the list goes on.

Good luck with your project. My sense is, that it'd be very hard to do this with a GT/4. What you got going for you though is the correct quarter rear air intakes, something that is difficult to replicate with a 308.

Whether it would qualify for a historic racing category I don't know. If that's the goal, I'd just stay with the GT/4.

You could make a Le Mans version of the GT/4 .. can't remember what they are called.

But saying that since you are stripping the cars body off the chassis, I cannot see why you could not make an awesome 288GTO replica.

You could easily take a hacksaw to the chassis and correct the wheelbase length ... and you could also turn the engine around and slap a Porsche 930 Turbo gearbox on the back!!!

Windscreen would be easy to get, making the bodywork supporting frame would be a large challenge, but Aussies are resourceful ;)

    Good luck.

I was thinking that the GT4 length would be a problem too but you never know if some other nutcase hasn't already done this :D

I remember someone put a V12 into a 308 for about $50k and it was a monster and you get these crazy ideas when you've got the thing down to frame level and you think "hey, wonder what panel kit I can get for this chassis ?", then you think about V12s, turbos, etc you know, idle hands and minds lead to crazy contraptions :D

Bert, you are in the seriously disturbed dept my friend :D , looks nice but a lot of hard work for sure (I know just pulling the thing apart is a pain let alone modifying the boy as nicely as you have done)

Thanks for all the advise guys, much appreciated

I agree with that. There are even kits out there to modify a GT/4 into a racer and with not too much effort and some paint you could replicate a real historic car.

One of the issues with the 288 GTO replica is, that you most likely end up with a bit of a poseur car: The real deal had about 400hp, how do you duplicate that with the GT/4 engine?

Having said that, there are ways: You could a full conversion and use a 348 engine eg. which comes longitudinally and has better base hp than the GT/4. Then add turbos or a blower to it. But again, that is all a lot of work and it becomes questionable, whether it is worth the effort.

Honestly, if you wanted the car turn into something else, I'd go with the Le Mans mod.

I agree, the LeMans is the best choice.

Doing a 288 GTO in a GT4 (while is possible, it's a lot more trouble) If your really want a 288 GTO replica i would say try to get a GTB instead of going throught all the trouble wiht the GT4.

    Cheers

This GT4 "LM" conversion was at Martin (Cavallino) for a while:

Here is a site I found on the building, and the body moulds still exist appearently!

This is a 50% GTO conversion on ebay, wide front, narrow rear, seems car got hit in the front and owner decided replica GTO front was cheaper than real 328 front:
