Did Enzo relly 'gift' these cars? Or were they sold at a nice price?

Piccinini got them as bonus for his work for the factory.
Confirmed in writing in the Ferrari Classiche Red Books.

This pair of prototypes belong in a museum at this late date and perhaps the occasional show field...

If private museum or collection fits your description I am sure that is the future for them.

Those are both spectacular. I hope their next caretaker continues to keep them pristine. Those are big pieces of Ferrari history...

Just amazing. Right off the bat it looks like the F40 prototype has 5 slats on the rear vs 4 on the production car. I would expect to find more substantial details. Some other prototypes had a greater number of slats on the clear engine cover- but this one looks like it has the standard 9? (Just a bit tired right now). I also believe the production F40 wheels are stronger than the prototype wheels. The F40 also seems to have an electrical shut off that's not present on the production car. That's all I can think of at the moment. Not sure on the 288.

Wow, wow... incredible pieces of history!

The differences in the F40 are listed in the advert, the mirrors are another giveaway. As I mentioned this is the car that was used to produce the well known Burago model which always looked different to the production F40s

A couple of other minor differences:
    1) intercoolers on production cars don't have the Behr logo on top
    2) production cars have a scuff plate next to the accelerator

Very nice tidbit of info, here. Thanks!

I knew it back then that there is something off with the Bburago's F40 casting but couldn't put a finger on it.

I remember those pictures Joe and I never quite understood why those mirrors never made to production. In my opinion they look so much better....
