Having found this wonderful site and my favourite Ferrari being a 288 GTO. Here is a photo of a 288 I saw outside the factory in Maranello in May '04 when I visited.

I always hear the name of 288 GTO and never know which car is it. Then I saw the pic and realized it's one of my favorite. The style and look is just amazing. However, I don't know why this car fall into the Super Car category. I thought this is like a 575 range type of Ferrari. Can someone please educate me? Thanks.

Well, for one the engine for it's time was very out of the ordinary. A longitudinal mounted (rather than the transverse unit in the 308s) V8 with twin KKK turbo chargers and twin IHI intercoolers pumping out aprox 400hp with a displacement of only 288cc. That's 138.89hp per liter. Cars during the 80s weren't throwing down those kind of numbers.

Also the car was made in very limited numbers. It was originally to be run in the Group B rally category. The homoligation (the letters "GTO" stand for "Gran Turismo Omologato" which translates into "Grand Touring Homologated" or "approval" for racing) at the time required a minimum of 200 road going versions to be built. Ferrari built the 200 required and a few more. The factory said they were only going to build the 200 needed and if memory serves me well there was a total of 254 built, but I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong :). (which I think I am) The joke at the time was that Ferrari was making up for the 61 1962 250 GTOs that weren't actually made, even though the racing body at the time required 100 cars to be built.

    That's the short story.

    Engine pick attached.

Technically you could say it is hte first of the true Ferrari supercars, the cars that are meant to be something special even for Ferrari for production intended for the public. The rest of course are F40, F50, and the Enzo.

Here is some more information about it. http://fast-autos.net/ferrari/ferrari288gto.html

Is that Anna Nicole on the hood of that GTO? I wouldn't even let HER on the hood of my car. She'll dent it!

Just realized that is Anna Nicole Smith......she was so much hotter and even a tad classy then.

Anyone hear this week how she had to pay back some of those million her "ex-husband" had given her?

    LOL

    What a mess!

It was the first Ferrari supercar, it even had many body panels made of kevlar(hope I typed it right), I have an European mag. with the 0-60 in 4,7 and the 1/4mile in 12,7 and the top speed of 189mph and that was a 1985 design!
