    Hi all,

I am very soon receiving my new ‘25 GTB and was looking for a little advice on the warm up of the engine.

With the obvious ability to take off in pure EV mode and let’s say 5min into a short drive you want to go and hit Performance or other ICE mode and get on it, it seems like many of these reviews they just hit it hard on the fly.
Am I missing something or should I stick with a very gentle engine run up to warm properly before going hard?

    cheers

A lot of opinions on this.. One thing I do know is that if you start off in EV mode and drive in it, the ICE engine is not running and is not warming up, so it definitely does not help with a safe engine start up. In fact, it’s probably the opposite as various portions of the powertrain will be at immediate stress as they have not been heated up for safe tolerance. Historically, an example would be getting proper amount of properly heated oil between the cylinder and the piston. I know on my TdF, it has race tappets and they definitely need to have a full engine warm up so they dont have a short life.

I find it pretty amazing that a block of metal that is roughly .5L is flying up and down the cylinder 140 times per second! And it works for tens of thousands of miles. In very slow motion frame capture, one can see the actual piston lead stretching.

So in my opinion getting to the point where there is sufficient engine warm up is either indicated on the dash when the “Warm Up” indicator is off or will be shortly and you are going slow with low rpm with little rpm change.
On my cars, this has usually been 180F and 170F on the oil temp and water temp. That’s what I do.

The main recommendation in the owners manual is not to go high speed til the oil is at 65/70 deg c - there's another 300 pages of advice all to be learnt by heart !

I always take off in EV mode, once the battery is empty and the ICE takes over, I go gently until the warmup signs disappears.

I never had any issues, 19500 kms done and dusted.

About what speed and gear are you in when you shift into ICE mode from EV?

Depends, max. 130 km/h. The engine decides.

Unless I want to go faster, in that case I switch by myself to ICE in order to have the correct engine temp..

I start in ICE mode and ease off at a sensible pace keeping low RPMs until warm, just like any other car. It is not rocket science.

Thanks for everyone’s feedback and since I live on a colder climate I like the idea of a gradual engine warm initially and then maybe toggle EV at will.

thanks again. I guess all those car reviewers do t worry when it’s not theirs or it’s a press car.

    cheers

I have posted before about problems with the car/gearbox being jerky if you don't start the ICE.

I live in the UK and even in the summer I follow this procedure:

Start car in qualy or performance mode.
Wait 30 seconds (ish) and set off.
Very gentle acceleration until the blue catalyst icon goes out (looks like rectangle with four wavy lines about it).
No hard acceleration until "Warmup" goes on the vehicle status screen.
As soon as Warmup goes out I drive it normally.

When the car is very cold gear changes are VERY noticeable. This is apparently normal with the 296. Once my car is warm I can barely feel upshifts and downshifts.

I would recommend you stick to Sport mode or Wet in winter. I accidentally left mine in Race a few days back... this resulted in a VERY stomach churning moment when I accelerated fairly hard on a perfectly straight road from 30mph :) As the manual says - race mode is for high grip conditions. I avoided the ditch.... just.
