My cousin has an STi turned track car to go along with his 360 Challenge car. The Challenge car was getting a bit expensive for numerous track outings so he purchased an STi new in '04 and put about $30k into engine mods and cage, fuel cell, etc. He wanted to make sure it could still keep up with the Ferraris on track day :)

I have a 2001 Boxster S with slight modifications that I use for track days. I sold my Z06 track car to get the Boxster S. The Z06 drives very "BIG" and feels much less precise than the Boxster S. Boxster also sits outside and is my daily driver when weather is nice. Very reliable, not too expensive to fix. Much less HP than Z06 but convertible, which I love. Just make sure the roll bars are adequate - some tracks require aftermarket...

My track car had to be mid-engined - I prefer the handling over ANY front or rear engined car.

My brother uses a modified Mustang GT - fun to modify & Cheap, feels like a nascar car on the track. When he gets bored he modifies the car. The Boxster is very limited in that respect due to space constraints. The Mustang allows so many more configurations.

I haven't seen it on the track yet, I've only ridden in it on the street. But I think it does okay, the shop that helped build it up claims 500 hp and its been lightened up significantly with everything stripped out and some carbon exterior including the doors.

There are a couple of guys on here if you do a search that own them. General consensus seems to be they are amazing. Do a web search on Spring Mountain Motors as they seem to have the most knowledge (at least in the west). You can make them street legal but would probably have to remove some low splitters and such and change out the suspension. Boy it would be fun to drive one of these down the street! They have some cool videos on their website of reviews and track days.

'99-05 VW Golf MK4 GTI with upgraded turbo system, brakes, suspension, stripped, caged is huge fun that won't break the wallet, at least until it breaks. It will survive many a track day. An interesting twist away from the tried and true Miata or 3-series track beast.
