At around 34K miles, I've noticed that my 2nd gear synchromesh is getting weak. Upshifts work fine, but downshifts almost invariably produce a grinding sound, no matter how well I try to match the revs, unless I double-clutch. Given the fact that double-clutching does the trick, I can live with this, but I'm wondering if this is an abnormally low mileage for this to happen. All the other gears seem perfectly okay.

    Dinodan,

I don't know if this is a common problem or not but my 46K original documented mile '72 also has a less than perfect 2nd gear. Very slight crunch when cold (sometimes warm) and downshifting must be matched. All other gears fine.

I replaced mine at about 18K and the gearbox was a completely different (and wonderful) animal.

I pulled the engine and gearbox in a major service and went through it. Only the 2nd gear synchro showed any damage so it was replaced.

Still, I double clutched to protect it -- especially when cold.

The biggest single improvement I ever did to the car's driving was replacing the second gear synchro, the flat clutch cable, and the clutch -- oh, and the ujoint in the shift mechanism. All seem pretty weak or easily damaged by age.

I had trouble with 2nd gear when I fist got my car.

But as time went on the Dino got to know me and love me and 2nd gear issues have gone away. I have no other explaination. :)

2nd gear synchro is, one of, the weak links in the gearbox.
Replace with equivalent Porsche item and be careful when using 2nd after that.

Wait until the "honeymoon" is over and the car gets tired of you...

Clearly at first it was a rebellious car, longing for the comfy confines of Villanova. Later, as the car realized that no amount of misbehaving was going to get it sent back to PA, it decided to stop being petulant.

That and perhaps you got just a little better with the gearbox. That synchro had less that 3000 miles on it when I shipped her to you.
