I have bought them all over but I tried my local Volvo shop and for $2 each I got the exact same shim 33mm OD if I recall correctly. It seemed that the Volvo ones were closer to the spec number also, on the recommendation of a Ferrari mechanic I replaced all of them. I was also very paranoid about bending a valve so I put a long chopstick in at TDC and marked it with a pen then hole in question. I rotated the engine until the lobe pointed straight up and rotated it until the mark went down at least an inch or more before I used the tool to depress the shim...... If you e-mail me I will send a pdf of my valve chart diagram, which may help you with your service. Rob Image Unavailable, Please Login
I got mine at a Volvo shop and he mentioned that Jaguar used them as well. Pretty common European shim size apparently.
I was just about to ask about shims since the distributors and cam shaft seals are getting done now. I shall try the volvo dealers first Hmmmmmmmmmmm ......... if I put Volvo parts inside my 308 will I suddenly develop a tendancy to drive out in front of motorcycles ?? .... hope not !
Don't use volvo shims on the 308, it's not original ferrari equipment and will lower the value of the car. You'll never be able to sell it.
You just made my morning tea come out my nose.... and all over my monitor!! Tooooo funny! Now if you could just work a timing belt replacement innuendo into that. Rick
Skip the Volvo dealership...I went there and they wanted something like $17/piece AND had to be special ordered. I got mine from International Auto Parts (Alfa/FIAT place) for something like $1.67/piece.
I went to my local independent Volvo repair shop. The first time I bought shims for $3 or $4 a pop, the next time he just gave me one. YMMV.
I have about 300 shims, email me or check out my eBay auction. Brand new never used. Will trade for used shims and my cost. ($5) shipping included
