Any body have any experience with up rated springs and retainers ?I've done a search and not come up with much . I'm worried my original springs have been around a while and some of them could have been sitting fully compressed for long periods .

No knowledge on a 2v, but I did it in a 4v. I know Norwood has better springs available for the 2v engines. The WSM has the spring info to check your springs, my 4v springs all failed the free height dimension so I through them out and didn't both checking anything else.

I used a set of Norwood's on one motor and for the next motor I have a set of IRL springs with custom Ti retainers.

If someone wants to do some research, I have all the required dim's, heights, and loads . . . I've tried to find something off the shelf that would work . .. what could be done pretty reasonable perhaps is use some import springs and just remachine the retainer for the valve stem. I think there's some decent priced replacement springs from some of the suppliers that use the stock retainer if that's all you care about.

Thanks a lot Dave :) ....Now in addition to my long-sleeping 308's Sodium valves, I've got to worry about the valve springs, too!!

Seriously, I wouldn't worry too much about the springs unless you've got a higher mileage engine. If you are really concerned about it, go ahead and take them out and inspect the free heights and squareness to be 100% sure.

But, in general, coil springs are more susceptible to "taking a set", resulting in permanent height deformation long or short, from fatigue (caused by high number of cycles) rather than from prolonged periods of static compression / extension --- provided that the compression / extension is within the designed range of travel for the spring, which of course it is if the heads have been completely assembled the whole time.
