I've noticed when I change the oil it is way above full on the dipstick. I refill with a bit over 10 quarts, which is what the book calls for. Any ideas?

The full 10 quarts will over fill it abit. I do 8 quarts, then run the engine, check and add, repeat. I think the book says 10 quarts based on empty system, and unless you can confirm all your old oil is out of every nook and cranny, I would never just fill it up by the book. Overfilling the oil can cause damage, the engine pistons have to run through 3x or 4x times more force through the oil. Get rid of some oil before you damage your engine if its way over the max line. Going over abit could also lead to oil leaks as its got to go somewhere right.

    REF DATA:
    10 quarts = 9.46 Liters

    AGIP SINT 2000 SAE 10W50
Engine oil total capacity 2.64 gallons or (10 liters)

Yep, there is likely oil in the oil cooler that doesn't all drain out. I too put in 8 quarts and then top from there. Just drain off a bit until you get to the right level.

Ditto. With my former '84 Mondial QV, I did the same thing, and with my 308 and now 328 also. If you simply pour in 10 quarts, you will likely be overfilling it. I always started checking the dip stick after 7 quarts, then added one at a time, and checked again. Most times, it was 9 quarts. Then I'd run the engine for 5 minutes, turn it off, give a few minutes to drain down, and check again. Definitely do not run the engine if it is above the Max marking on the dipstick, as another poster said.

... or almost 12 quarts, changed the T last month and it took all 12 quarts to put the mark near the top range of the dip stick
