In my search for a muffler that is free flowing, but quieter than the current Tubistyle, I have test installed a stainless steel Magnaflow #14262 5"x8"x18" muffler with dual stainless steel 3" tips. Tried to do a true dual exhaust, but lack of space and US headers coming off on the same side prevented this (Believe me, I tried). Opted for large bore free flow.

Verdict: It's quieter than a Tubi at off/part throttle cruise and idle, but as loud the rest of the time (i.e. on throttle). The note tone is lower overall, but still has a little of that buzzy Tubistyle/360 Modena sound (no offense to anyone here) that I'm not really crazy about. Tubi boominess at cruise is definitely gone. Subjective only, but the car felt a bit revvier than even the Tubi, which was an improvement over stock.
Total price installed was under $600 in 4 hours. Will hold with this for now, but will look at a couple of DynoMax options, as will be easy to weld in a new muffler now that I have a basic template. I have also learned from this muffler's construction what I will need to look for in the future, so hope the next installation, probably under $160, will get what I'm looking for, although I'm not really in a hurry.

Did the tips come with the muffler or are they a eperate purchase? What was your source for the tips if the were.

They look great from the rear.

Great job! I had planned on doing the same with my car (already had the Magnaflow part # picked out and the measurements done), however I could never find the time to sit down and make it work.

I ended up caughing up the money for a Tubi, although I think I could have obtained close to the same sound (and HP gain) with the Magnaflow at a fraction of the cost of the Tubi.

Anyway, congrats. I think it turned out looking really good. I'm glad to see someone else was able to see the project through to the end.

It'll be louder and deeper sounding (at least at idle) with more overlap if my car is anything to go by.
More flames out the back too.
    What's wrong with stock muffler?

Mule - Thanks. The tips were a high quality s/s separate piece - $138 - will get the source tomorrow for you.

Chris - Thanks. I'm a government employee so I have lots of time :)

Mark - Dema was finishing today; drop the car off tomorrow, cams should arrive Fedex Wednesday, hope to pick up Sat am with new cams, distributor, Koni coil overs and s/s brake lines. Will be out for a couple of weeks, then return. Hope you can come down before I go to Texas in June. We'll toast Philip in absentia.

The tubi I have is fine, but a bit loud if you are not in the mood. As I use mine for trips and socially (it is a GT), needed a different application.
A deeper tone is good. Would like to smooth it out a bit as well.

Excellent job. I'm thinking of going a similar route with my 348. The price that Tubi wants for an exhaust it rediculous in my opinion. Either that or if I can find a cheap challenge exhaust I would consider that. What ever the case, I'm not about to pony up a couple grand for a muffler.

    Russ,

that looks exceptional! I've also been experimenting with my Mondial 8 using a Flowmaster 80 series crossflow dual in / dual out (42582). It's made for transverse applications (Camaro/Firebird), so it has 1 inlet and 1 outlet on both ends. However, since it's an experiment its aluminized, not stainless, so it doesn't look as good as yours. Much more compact than stock muffler. Gotta bone up on my welding skills to make mounts for it.

I'm also interested in a source for compatible tip. Keep up the good work,

    Tom

This Tubi will fit SINGLE CAT muffler systems on transverse V-8s. I'm not sure when the qvs went from two to one catalytic converters.

    Russ,
It really looks great. A lot smaller (and lighter, I'm sure) than the stock and tubi exhausts. Moving it forward and eliminating the extra elbow is a nice design too. I guess you gave up on the Stebro tips.

Can you post a closer pic of your engine cover? I guess you changed that too and eliminated the brake light. Was this change made to keep rain out and also cut down on noise or was it for appearance?

Thanks! The Stebro thing turned out to be a disaster - they kept promising multiple deliveries and it never showed up. After about the 4th time I told them they make good products, but I did not trust them anymore and to cancel the order and refund the money. The whole Magnaflow deal including muffler, tips and installation cost less than their tips alone price.

The American rear grill does not come with a rear fog light as its Euro cousins, so just opened up the stock grill a bit for the larger tips - no significant change.

I have installed this muffler with 2.5 inlet and outlet pipes, (no tips) good deep tone but - WAY LOUD, so I added the twin resonator tips as you can see. I was waiting for the K&N to arrive and was looking for bad fuel/vapor lines, so i had the air cleaner assembly off when we were doing the muffler.
After the muffler and pipes were installed, I fired it up in the shop and it sounded like a serious race car, very deep and loud, everybody came over to check it out. Because of the low exhaust restriction, i suppose it leaned out quite a bit and it was backfiring and blasting flames out the stacks - IMPRESIVO. Knew i couldn't get by with this on the street so did the resonators and now it is manageable if i show restraint, especially in town.
Jim, the exhaust tec. left all of the original spring mounts in place and welded a 1/4 steel bracket to use the stock mount. I also requested that he weld in a heat shield to try to keep the exhaust heat off of the lower inner a arm bushings. He had a ss heat shield hanging around so he installed that as well. The part numbers for the resonator tips are in my office and if you would like them send me a note. Once I find all of the fuel leaks, I will get it back on the road and do a recording of the sound. On recommendation, I have bumped the mains to 140 and the ac to 200 and disconnected the low speed points.

Haven't seen it with the tips, but Chris did a very nice job on his installation from previous thread posted pictures. Sure wish I had the qv or Euro 3.2 headers where I could run a dual system.
It's amazing how every car reacts to mufflers a bit differently, and how every speed shop has wildly differing opinions. Here are some generalities I am learning:
Larger muffler volume: quieter, lower tone - although difficult to compare between brands.
Two basic kinds: straight flow through and baffled/chambered, and some combos. Flow through the loudest and least restrictive.
The Dynomax website (www.dynomax.com) is good as it gives no-loss max hp ratings with comparable CFMs that give a feel on what the range is with different configurations and pipe sizes.
You can look at a used muffler/exhaust system and tell it's stress zones by the heat markings on it. Even on my s/s tubi, could tell the stress areas for heat. OBTW, the 3.2 liter single cat tubi is a 3 chamber baffle acoustic box design where much of the heat stress is dissapated into the 90 degree bend into the muffler. It's amazing how rugged the tubi is built looking at it out of the car after use.

When I installed this free flow muffler, my engine started popping on decell as well not present on the tubi. Certainly seemed to rev quicker. Hmm...need new jetting? - would guess slightly bigger idles for off throttle mixture richening? But dang, these performance mufflers can be a drone on a trip at 70 - 80 mph for aged guys like me if you are not in the mood. :) I will get this thing tweaked to a good compromise.

    more to follow...

    Hey Russ!

Love what you are doing to your car. I need to replace my muffler on my 83 308 and I am curious who you had fabricate your exhaust. I am guessing that you did it all. I am in the DC area and would love to check out your car this weekend if you are around so I can pick your brain and get some ideas for my car. I can always help turn a wrench, hold one or just pass you a beer. LOL

Have gotten some private messages asking about applications for the 308s. They have manifolds that come off of different sides of the car (better, actually), so will post some pictures from other FChat threads and websites to show the stock exhaust (small picture) and examples of custom high performance replacements:

    Russ,

Thanks so much for posting my old pics, I haven't been able to shrink the ones I have to fit the chat criteria.
The resonator tips shown in the installed photo are:

    Angelus Plating Works Part # MT2389 (2 3/8 by 9). (not stainless)
    cost about $75.00 each.

If you look closely at the old 77 308 Thermal reactor, you will see a lumpy metal covering around the two inlet pipes. I believe this is both heat shielding for the adjacent parts and an attempt by ferrari to retain the heat, for emission purposes.
Be advised that this old thermal reactor weighs almost 100 pounds. The entire replacement system probably weighs 25 pounds.

The really cool black one is a direct photo snatch from the old archives, (sorry, I will post credit tomorow for the fine work).

Anyway, this was the start of my system.

    regards,

    chris

    Tom,

Robert Davis is the owner that did the wrinkle black flowmaster conversion in the above photos. Jim Frasier, (JF) did my fabrication.
Check the old tec archives under "flowmaster project complete" for his posts and notes.
Jim did not have any drawings, only the muffler and some 2 1/2 pipe.
I have cleaned and painted the exhaust since the above fabrication photos, (Matt black VHT).
I have no advice on the FI other than to say that from the posts I've seen this is the way to go for both driveability, hp and most likely mileage. Serious bucks.
I like the sound, cost and simplicity of the webers.

    good luck,
    chris
