I was crusing through the Ferrari Owners Site and drilled down into a section called The Hidden Ferrari. Below that is a section called the Pilot Engine Development Workshop.
Whoa! There is some stuff in there.
There's a twin turbo V8 with gear-driven cams, a Boxer 6 cylinder (maybe supercharged) and some other cool stuff, but the most interesting picture is of a 3 Cylinder 2 Stroke Engine with twin port fuel injectors per cylinder. It also has SOHC actuated exhaust valves. It also looks to have blanking plugs in the head for direct fuel injection if needed.
It could be a test unit to scale up to a V or Boxer 6 or 12 cylinder engine.

    Anybody else see this thing?

It is indeed an interesting engine. The picture in a book on Ferrari engines I have has the following caption: "An interesting three cylinder two stroke supercharged prototype shows the versatility and the interest of the Ferrari research department for unusual products". Other descriptiive information has it dated in 1994 with "model" number of F134. It is described as an L 3 configuration with a displacement of 1346 cc and producing 130 horsepower at 5000 rpm.

Missed it on the owners site. Guess I haven't prowled deeply enough.

    Ciao,

    John

at only 5000 RPM. That's amazing. Imagine if they had developed it further with direct injection and cranked it up to 10,000 RPM.
    Thanks for the info.

Remember that it's a two stroke. So those power numbers aren't that amazing. They're typical of dirt bike engines (even in the 70s).

But then all bike engines make the specific output per liter of car engines look shabby. It's not unusual to see 160 BHP per liter in modern 4 stroke street bike engines.
If Ferrari could achieve specific outputs like this an F430 would have 688 BHP!
Might even do wheelies too - LOL
