    It is very true you can get a very fast Corvette for very little money. Mustangs 289? I do not believe there is any such thing as a fast Mustang 289. And I have driven a few of them. But perhaps there was some tuning of which I am unaware. Certainly after market perhaps. But a stock 289? Please correct me, but I think stock is a 16 second car. And handles like a school bus! It has the same platform as a 1965 Falcon! The same platform as my mother's 1964 Comet!

    I like some of our American Iron. But the 1964 Comet four speed is not one of them.

    Not so. In the 60's, Ford produced a hi performance version of the 289 (4.7L), the "K" code engine. It was rated at 271 hp (gross SAE, today we rate net) and was very quick for its time. A friend had one, 4 on the floor, it was a loud, snarly bit of a beast. The 289 K code

    A well tuned car would do mid to high 6's in the 0-60 sprint. Faster than the Mondials (perhaps because the Ford weighed in around 2600-2700 lbs.)

    Again, for its day, handling wasn't all that bad. Even on the bias ply tires that were used (it was easy to slide or 4 wheel drift the car!).
