I am new to the Ferrari world and I am looking to purchase a 328. I notice that many 328's are offered for sale with mileage in the 27,000 range. I understand that the 30,000 mile service is rather expensive. I also understand that major service must be done in time intervals, even if the car has little mileage increase during that period.

How much should I expect the 30,000 mile service to cost? How often should cam belt and other major service be completed?

Thanks in advance to my rather novice question.

Search 328 major service, been covered before many times.

~$2k-$5k (and I've seen them in the $10-12k range before) depending on what needs to be done when you're in there...

Thanks Judge, I tried a search but used the wrong word strings. I appreciate the info.

As you note, the 27,000 miles on the odometer isn't as important as the interval since the last service. Ferrari specifies every 3 years for the belt change, although some people think this is too soon.

Also know that a 'belt service' and a 'major service' aren't necessarily the same thing -- a major service includes the belts and more. Many Ferraris listed for sale with a 'belt service' are probably due for a major.

I think Judge is about right on the costs. I've never heard of a major service for $2K, but $3K-$5K matches what I've paid.

It seems highly unlikely to me that so many 328s have genuine mileages after 20 years conveniently around that figure

Boxer, I agree that it is "interesting" of 328's and some 308's that have mileage in the 27,000 range. One of the reasons, if the mileage is legitimate, may be that owners sell cars at that point to avoid the dreaded 30,000 mile service. I would probably prefer a car that has 31k and has had the service done.

It's not just a matter of having it done, but when. There is a time factor in play here. Rubber gets old and needs to be replaced. What I spotted as a small coolant leak on my 308 this weekend will entail replacing the entire water line from the engine to the radiator over the winter. The line is dry rotted on the inside, but you can't tell that from the outside.

I agree, I've never seen a service in the 2K range as the parts alone can be close to that. I even 15 to 18 years ago major service quotes were in the $3,000-4,000 range. Today I think a major service with belts is commonly in the $3,000-5,000. I have only heard of changing the belts every three years on 360s. I thought 308s and 328s it was every 4-5 years or 30,000 miles. I had a garage bunny in that family that had not been driven in 10 years (only had 1350 miles) when I had her brought back to life again last year. I had a major service, new belts, hoses, cam shaft seals, shift shaft seals, tires and changed the gear bolts, etc. and it ran about $12,000. As others have mentioned rubber dries out with non use, and belts deform and dry out also. Low mileage and age can mean a car needs service just as badly as a car with a lot of mileage. I'm sure many of the cars up for sale with just shy of 30,000 miles are owners deciding to abandon ship before a major service. Just make sure if you buy one that hasn't had a major service recently that the price reflects that.

    Best regards,
    Dino

Keep in mind if the car does indeed needs a major service, you can use that to negotiate a lower sales price. Tell the owner you have to drop the price by $5,000, then meet halfway at $2,500 to $3,000 price reduction.

also remember the service - major or belt change - is only as good as the mechanic. there is a difference in quality. so make sure whoever did the major service is someone known vs a no-name without any reputation

Reaching 30k miles is irrelevant to the service on a TWENTY year old car....it is all about the years. Every 5 years it has to be done. The 30K service is hardly something to be "dreaded", it is simply a part of ownership...I have been through three of them (2 on a 308 and one on a 328) it is not a big deal, and the car drives so wonderfully after a fresh service....WORTH IT! :)

hello! i'm italian, an place where made ferrari :)

a lot of people forget that ferrari is a FIAT production..... !!
a lot of parts of 308/328/mondial/testarossa etc
its SAME of fiat cars !! testarossa electric light system build with FIAT RITMO parts, and more parts of 308/328 same of FIAT UNO (belts)

if you go on italian sale parts shop with old parts sure find a "same" part used for another italian car

a price for a Fiat part is 10, a price for ferrari same part is 1000 !! keep in mind THE SAME PART!!

made a service with original parts is very expensive, but made a service with same not original parts very simply
