I have owned my '82 308 GTBI now for 24 years and love it. What I have liked the most is the howl the engine makes at and above 5000 RPM but recently the sound has become intermittent. I hear the sound most of the time but not every time. I don't ever remember it not making that howl sound in the past. Does anyone have an idea why this sound is now intermittant? As I understand it the belts are making the sound and were changed a few hundred miles ago.

Great to hear you have owned your 308 for 24 years mate! That is awesome!! :D:D

If the belts were changed a few hundred miles ago, they probably just need to be adjusted again. Belts/rubber stretches a little from new and may need adjusting. :):)

I like to nip them up just that little bit more so the customer doesnt come back in 6 weeks time with a noisey/squealing belt. :D:D

I have also seen worn belt pullies, so its one or the other mate. Get the noise looked at asap. :):)

I am confused. The 308 timing belts are self adjusting and then locked down, right? I thought it was a bad idea to reset them? Once set they should not be touched according to manual. I am confused by this. So I should release timing belts and then reset them?

    WHOOOOOOOOOAAAAA, hold on! :D:D

I am talking about the alternator and a/c belts here mate. NOT the timing belt! :D:D

Did you have the cam belt and belts changed a few hundred miles ago?? Cam belts dont normally howl, only the accessory belts do mate. :):)

You shouldnt have a loose cam belt there brother, check the other belts. ;);)

    ---------------

All these years I "assumed" it was the timing belt causing howl that I love. So it is the alternator belt making that great sound. Yes, it might be a little loose because I used old belt and not new after replacing timing belts. Well once again I "assumed" something and it sent me in the wrong direction. I liked it better when I thought it was the timing belts making that great howling sound. Thanks for the help--I will fix.

I have not had time to tighten the accessory belt yet. I will soon. Half of our country is trying to elect a socialist today so my mind is on our possible new socialist government, LOL! I founding Fathers have to be rolling over in their graves. Finding time is not easy even though I am retired. This information about my great Ferrari howl at and above 5000 rpm coming from the two little accessory belts and not the timing belts has me confused to say the least. Why then does Ferrari (all Ferrari's) make that beautiful sounding howl and not other cars. They all have accessory belts, right? I should just be happy it is not a problem with timing belts and leave it at that, LOL! Thanks Marty

Yeah mate, I dont really understand the 'howl' you talk of. :D:D

It could be something else? I am just assuming it is a belt noise?? :p:p

Have fun today with the election. ;);)
