308 2V Cam Locking Tool, loan or sell?

Hi, I am looking for a QV cam lock tool as I plan to refresh belts this winter too. I was told to simply use a vise grips to hold the cam gears tight together since they are so close...any thoughts, ( I try to keep my trusty "universal" vise grips far away from my ferraris as you tend to get lazy and sloppy with that tool)

 

I don't see a problem using vice grips on the cam shafts. I'd use the curved jaw ones with a thick piece of cardboard around the shaft. They don't have to clamp that hard, just enough to keep the valve springs from turning the cams. Certainly a lot safer than paper under the cam caps.

Allegedly the WSM for one of the newer Ferraris (348? 355?) shows using a pair of vice grips clamped onto the cams with the handles duck taped together!!! Believe I saw the WSM picture posted a few years back.

Also I believe that one of the pros has admitted to using vice grips.

However, If you aren't planning on pulling the cam covers, then there's really no place to clamp vice grips onto.
