I'm in the process of changing the outer cam drive bearings on my 308 2V. In case it matters, my car is one of the last 2V made. I just got the pulley off last night and things are a little weird. After pulling the pulley, there was a snap ring and then a sealed bearing (which I haven't pulled yet). The parts diagram at Ricambi shows a seal, followed by a snap ring, and a bearing. The new outer bearing I ordered from superformance is unsealed. Is the sealed bearing and no oil seal a change that was made later in the car's life? Is this better than the oil seal and an unsealed bearing?

the unsealed bearing sits on the shaft inside of the cover so if i remember correctly looking at the timing pulley it go's as follows pulley, snap ring, bearing, then the housing, were inside the cover now, sping washer, unsealed bearing, (lubricated by the engine oil) snap ring, then shaft seal, (same kinda seal thats on the cam/dissy......good luck

Looks like we are on parallel paths right now. I'm waiting on one more tool and the bearings which should be here today or tomorrow. When the seal is the outboard item, the bearing can be unsealed. However, when the bearing is the outer item, it should be sealed, of the C4 clearance variant and have a high temp grease. I've had my pulley's off and have the same outer bearing as you see.

I did some checking and was told by many the factory spec is apparently a 6203 2RS C4 HT51. My contact in the bearing world says SKF has an exclusivity contract with Ferrari on this particular bearing and unfortunately does not have another batch run scheduled until June 2010. John at Motion industries found the same physical bearing with a slightly different spec grease (not HT51) which is only 5 degrees off HT51 on its max operating temp... which is still well above the temps it should see. About $25/ea in their Houston warehouse. Hope this helps.

The 308 spare parts manuals at Ricambi are only for the euro version. On the US versions, they made a change in 1978 to the configuration that you have with the sealed bearing being outside of the oil seal (so, no, you don't have the right parts!). Go here:

    http://ferrari.stevejenkins.com/books/

and download the "Ferrari 308 Spare Parts Catalog" (this is the 1978 US version 308 SPC 161/78). On page (TAV) 8, it shows the two different cam drive bearing configurations. I'd guess that US version 308-2Vi parts are the same as the later (after engine 0134) parts shown on TAV 8, but check that with your supplier.

Steve, thanks for posting that!! I've had the CEO's library for some years now but have neglected to use it since I got a copy of the 80 US parts catalog (193/80) in good old paper. My 1980 US version parts layout does NOT have the image in the upper left from the 161/78... well, it does now, I just added that section!! Never trust your documentation or test equipment...

My car is actually a 1981 GTSi Euro spec. Did they switch to the sealed bearings on the latest Euro cars? Are the two options interchangeable?

Interesting -- must just be a mistake in the euro 308-2Vi SPC where they didn't update the documentation (but it would make sense IMO that the euro also actually has the change incorporated -- it's a much better design for extending the life of the outer bearing).
As far as the parts being "interchangeable", I believe there are no changes to the outer housing and block, but the gears+shafts and sprockets are different so if you can get these parts (which you probably can't ;)), you could update the older design without needing changes on the engine castings.

(But I have no firsthand knowledge if all 308-2Vi euros use the updated design or if yours was updated -- although ramosel's post seems to indicate that they messed up the US 308-2Vi SPC documentation too, so high likelihood it's just a documentation error IMO.)

I have looked at that page in the parts book 10 times but never noticed the inset drawing of the alternative bearing configuration.

I guess this aspect of the project is again delayed while waiting on parts. Fortunately when your single car is taking up two stalls, you have a lot of other things to do.

I sat the two pages side by side and what Ferrari did on my 193/80 TAV 8 was drop the insert and put in the new part numbers without altering the drawing for the orientation. In the older book you see the original cam drive shaft at 27 (part number 104913) and the insert has the new shaft as 37 (part number 112017). In the newer book they drop the insert and only show 27, but it now has the new part number (112017). So the part numbers are right in the newer book, the drawing still shows the old orientation. This holds true on 27, 28, 29 & 30 and are noted as such in the part listing as some sort of split at motors 00133 and 00134?? Which doesn't really make sense as I have the later version, presumably the 00134 and above yet I seem to have 00094. Or am I not comparing the correct numbers???

The 00133 and 00134 serial numbers are for the F106AE engine family (the US '78/'79 carb engine family). You have a later/different engine family (F106B040), and they restarted the SN sequence over.

Superformance has the sealed outer bearings, but they aren't listed on the web so you'll have to call them. I just ordered them, and they should be here shortly.
