How different are 328 calipers and discs to a 308? Are they much more efficient ? And if so will a set bolt straight onto a 308?

Don't think they are a straight bolt-on. 328 brakes are not bad - but neither are they really great, but there are no aftermarket upgrade kits out there that I know of which says that the brakes are pretty OK.

However, the disks (rotors) are also pretty pricey and the rear is a "hat" type arrangement with the handbrake operating like a drum brake inside it. Both are single piston Teves calipers very similar to what VW use as it happens.

If I were upgrading a 308 I'd be looking at one of the kits that is around. If its a GT4 then at least one UK Indi does a modified 355 disk/caliper kit.

Later 328s came with ABS. The ABS calipers and rotors are definitely not plug-n-play on a 308. The pre-ABS 328 rotors and calipers are the same as 308 as far as I know, but someone else here may be able to confirm more definitively.

The 308 brakes with good fluid and pads are plenty adequate for just about anything, including track time. Not sure it needs an upgrade, even for "spirited" driving IMHO. I can see adding a cockpit adjustable bias control perhaps - that would allow you to tune the balance for whatever track conditions you're working in (a wet track will call for a different bias than a dry track, for example).

Actually not...All of the 328's use a ATE single piston floating brake caliper, front and rear.

There is a difference in the uprights that are used on the cars with the under the hat parking/emergency brake. Steve and I have speculated on the possibility of swapping later uprights onto an earlier car. I haven't had a chance to sit examples of each side by side to see if there would be any issues in the swap.... but hope to in the near future. Worse case should be changing the A-arms too.
