I've always wanted an F-car since I was a little kid (like most of us here), never quite could swing it and currently own a 911. I'm looking to make the jump but am concerned about the service costs. Over on the P-car boards the biggest reason people haven't made the jump to an F-car is maintenance;I am well aware that the 348 and all subsequent models onwards need the engine out service, but I'm limiting myself to the traverse engine models. What can I expect in terms of actual $$$$? I can do the basic stuff myself...

BTW, my first car was a Fiat and I still have an Alfa so I know how Italian cars can be; I'm looking for real-world approximate $$ figures. I'm looking at 308QVs and Mondial 3.2 Coupes......

    Grazie!

    Grazie,

I was also in the same thinking mode as you. I've been a Porsche owner my entire driving life, always however longing for a Ferrari. The maintenance was always a negative spot for me on the Ferraris, especially coming from the "bullet proof" world of 911's and 993'3.

I finally just purchased an 85 euro spec 308GTSI QV and absolutley love it. I did some pretty good research with my mechanic before the purchase. He baically told me that it's like any other car................if you take care of it, it will take care of you. First and foremost be sure to find a Ferrari that has been well taken care of so you can continue on with that way of thinking.
The major service on the 308 is the belt service, which I was told to do every 5 years or 15k - 20k miles and that the average cost would be 2k - 4k depending on what else it needs at the time. For a daily driver this may add up quick, but for a weekend car you will be in great shape.

I also just wanted to add that I've driven many Porsches and I think personally that the 308QV euro spec driving experience is much more enjoyable.

    Good luck with the hunt.

My use will be as a primarily a weekend car, so I'll be looking at major services every 3 years or so.

Aside from looking at the classifieds on this site, any other sources recommended for my search?

    Thanks!

A belt change is cheap, it is the major service that runs around $3,500 to $4,000. My 328 was far more reliable than the '86 911 3.2 carrera I owned, also it was much more so than a 928S I had some time before. If you can afford to run a 911 3.2 then I don't see why you couldn't afford a 328. I drove the 328 daily for about 10 years all the way to almost 70,000 miles and it was still solid by the time I sold it. The motor and transmision were like day one.

I have had a couple of QV's and a couple of 328's (currently a 89 GTB) Here is some guidance from experience.

Hypothetically, lets say you buy a 328 w/20K miles and a fresh major service. Let's say you keep it for 10 years and drive 3K miles/year. During the 30K miles, you are likely to spend the following:

    2 major service: 8000.
    1 clutch 1500. (2 if you are a clutz with a clutch)
    2 minor service 1000.
    Anual oil, etc. batteries 2000.
Minor repairs 5000. (probably a bit high, but one big one hurts
2 sets tires plus 2 rears 1800. (you can buy cheapies that last longer)
    Gas (150 gals/yr @ $2.) 3000.
    Total: 21,300.

    Add to this insurance 12,000
    depreciation 10,000
loss of income on 50K 20,000

    Total 63,300

You can add to this initial sales tax and property taxes which vary by location. If you are a true car nut you will probably spend money on detailing, perhaps painting the nose, etc. If you have some skill, you can save some by DIY. The QV's I had cost more in repairs, mainly tracking down ignition or fuel problems. Mondials have a reputation for electrical glitches but this seems to hit or miss by car. Obviously, even a "cheap" Ferrari is not cheap to run. It all comes down to how much one is willing to spend on their hobby. This scenario works out to about 530./month, $18 a day. Some people spend that much at Starbucks.

This is my two cents, and its only two cents. A ferrari is like any other car, no scientific formula required to fix it yourself, as long as it not a new 360. The older ones run fine, and are dependable. People who have horror stories may have just happen to get a lemon. But a few ferrari's and a few horrible esperiences, do not represent all ferrari cars out there. Believe it or not, italians do drink lots of wine, and somedays they get there wires crossed while wiring the cars, that a few cigerette burns. Regardless, I like to learn, and I have said to myself, if I buy the damn car, I will do everything myself, and enjoy learning about the car. I have a 78 308 GTS, I love the car. And also, Life is short, who cars, a ferrari is like a beautiful woman, who got to have and drive one at least once in your life to feel complet.

LOL ! I reference, once again, my trusty owner's manual for my 3.2 Mondial. 52,000 miles between belt changes. :) Drive and smile.
