I've done a search (including the archives) and I can't find any info about this. When I turn on the a/c in my 1984 308 GTS QV it make a high pitch noise and the pitch rises with the speed of the fan. The noise appears to be coming from the evaporator fan motor. I initially thought it was feedback through the speakers, but it is not. I had the car at the mechanic for an oil change last week and asked him to fix it, but he said "they all do that." I got into another 308 and sure enough the a/c had the same, but maybe not as loud, noise. I'd like to get rid of this noise, but I don't want to pay a bunch of money and not have it fixed. The a/c blows cold, but its hard to tolerate that noise for very long. (I may have found the reason for having a radio.) Do others have the same noise and has anyone done anything to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Mark

My 84gts makes the exact same sound. I too thought it was radio noise, but no. I'm sure it just the design of the fan whistling.

One of my F-cars is an 84, and the A/C fan doesn't make any unusual noises.

Maybe one of the bearings in the fan motor is going south.

This is quite common and sometimes it's just the AC motor's fan blades touching on the casing, (caused by excess end float in the motor). If you look up under the dash in the passenger's footwell and listen and confirm that is were the noise is coming from.

I'm pretty sure that the noise is coming from the evaporator fan. Can the evaporator be taken apart and the fan replaced? Has anyone had any success doing this?

i've done it and its not a bad job. you must have the system evacuated and then remove the box assembly. there are two bolts behind the relays/fuse box area and two bolts accessible after you rmove the trunk liner which hold the box. you may also have to remove the passenger side false floor. the front cover of the box is riveted together. you can remove the cover, then the evaporator itself to get to the fan. a replacement fan shouldn't be hard to find from an aftermarket a/c company. i bought one from arizona mobil air, but there are companies in florida and texas who sell them as well. steve
