With summer just around the corner (FL) and my suspension rebuild project coming to an end, I need to fix a nagging A/C problem. Last year I converted my a/c system to 134. Everything seems to be working great. Nice cold air, 42 degrees out of the vents. The problem is that now the passengers feet takes a bath when ever I make a left turn. I am thinking that the evaporator(I think that is correct) drain is clogged. If so, How do I get to it? Can you remove the a/c fan from under the dash with out total dash removal to get to the drain? I took a look at it and it looks like I have to remove the entire interior. LOL Whats new! Any other ideas or suggestions? As always.. Thanks!! Bill
You can check the vent tube under the dash at the base of the evaporator assembly. also check that the tube is coming out of the underbody panel. a lot of times if the panel has been removed, the tube is not placed properly through the panel a causing a blockage either by bending it or by the end of the tube being blocked against the panel. To clear the tube of blockage, you can also lightly blow compressed air through the tube from under the car back into the evaporator. regards, Jim
Thanks for the quick reply Jim! The drain tube is coming out of the bottom of the car. I have looked under the dash and I did not see the hose connected to the bottom of the evaporator box. I will take another look and try some compressed air up the tube. Any idea how to remove the fan assembly?
Bill, on my 308 the drain tube is at the very back of the evaperator on the left side where you can't see it, but you can feel it. Go down the center consol and reach around the false floor board passenger side and coming out the back of the unit it's about a 13MM hose. Im not sure that a left turn is the problem unless the hose may be pluged and the condensation is building up in the evaperator and coming out some other place. Lots of fun, on the upside down work under the dash. At most, I think you might need to remove the passenger false floor and correct the problem with the hose. I wish the only problem I had, was a wet spot on the passenger side. No, No, it's just got to be a bad second gear syncro. I'll bet you will be finished befor me. Good Luck Michael J.
Thanks for the help Michael. Yea, I think the evaporator box is filling up with water, so when I make a left turn the water dumps on my passengers feet. I thought I read some where in the archives that there is some foam in the evaporator box that can disintegrate over time, clog up the drain pipe, and just make a mess of everything. For the life of me I just can not figure out how to get to it with out taking out the dash. Plus, I am not sure if that is the problem or if I messed something up recharging my A/C system. So here I am....and depression sets in! Bill
Bill, Shouldn't have to remove the fan - as said lots of time on your back under the dash - here's a picture showing the location of the drain tube. Image Unavailable, Please Login
When mine blocked I put a little bit of air up the tube from underneath the car, never had a problem since.
you don't have to remove the dash. there are two bolts behind yhe fuse and relay boxes which hold the front of the evaporator box. if you remove the inner lining on the front firewall, inside the trunk, you will see all of the a/c hose connections and two more bolts. if you disconnect the hoses (make sure you evacuate the system first) and remove the bolts the unit will loosen. i had to remove the false floor in the passenger compartment but was able to drop the evaporator box. its not easy but can be done, and i'm sure is an easier job than removing the dashboard. good luck
