What are the options when purchasing after market exhaust for a 308 and does the sound of the car improve that much. I love the sound difference it makes on the newer models but have never heard a 308 with it. Anybody have any advice?

First, welcome to the forum. Nice to have more 308 folks here.

That said, I'd suggest you learn to use the search function for the forums. There are dozens of threads that talk about exhaust systems for the 308/328/Mondial, what they sound like, what they look like, how much they cost, how well they are put together, how well they fit, etc., etc., etc.

Since you're new, I'll throw in my $.02. I installed an ANSA 308 exhaust on my old Mondial QV a couple of years ago and loved it. Worked well, fit nicely and sounded great. And it was not that expensive, but also not stainless. The '78 308 GTS I bought this summer came with a Tubi exhaust installed. I love the way it sounds. Definitely pure Ferrari with more punch to it. I have heard that the Larini system is really nice, well built and reasonably priced, and supposedly sounds great too. You have a lot of choices out there and a wide range of prices.

I believe I said it before, but in case you missed it:

I had Dave Helms of Scuderia Rampante in Boulder, Colorado install Hyper-Flow converters on my 308GTBi back in July. I also added a K&N air filter.

The car ROCKS! I would almost swear I was driving a 355, and that's in one of the "slow" 308s! The cats for my car cost about $1400, and of course I had to make sure the car was precisely tuned - Dave saw to that. These cats don't make the car much louder, but they do create a nice, gutteral "purr." They're all-stainless, too.

By the way, Dave Helms is probably among the world's best Ferrari mechanics, and a helluva nice guy, too. Troy, at Hyper-Flow, is also a true gentleman who really knows what it takes to make a customer happy.

Check out Troy's website, or contact me if I can tell you more. (NO, I am not getting paid to say this!)

I understand the question, especially when it comes to searching.

Part of the problem here is that there are so *many* threads about exhaust systems it's really hard to figure anything out.

Ideally you find another car you like and follow suit. But, that isn't easy either.

Someone should write a treatise on the subject summarizing the key points :).

For me I would like to do the airbox mod, remove the cats and do it cheap. And after a bunch of searches I'm still not sure where to start. Though I must say I have heard a car with an ANSA exhaust and it did sound nice.

For my 2 cents worth, I used a Mille Miglia stainless, good sound, good price, good quality. But we don't have cats on our 308's in Australia.

Here's a thread with some info. Lots of theory/tech discussion, but alos some good leads (& pics) on some custom & home brew set-ups as well.

If you go way back to the begining, I think I posted some additional links to some long ago custom exhaust threads as well.

    Good luck

It is, I have one on mine. I was going to go the Mangnaflow/glass pack route but couldn't find a muffler shop that did mandrel bending. All I got was "Well, we can try...". No thanks, besides I like the idea of a well built, tuned exhaust, specifically made for the car.

forgot to add that I've heard a Capristo on an '84 Euro that sounded VERY nice, a more aggressive note than the Larini, but more expensive too.

So....instead of dropped $2,700 on a Larini exhaust system (that still only has 1 muffler instead of true dual exhaust)...what would happen if I just switched to a couple of $50 "Glasspack" mufflers from Schucks?

I've already switched to "test pipes."

Yep, going through that right now on my '82 GTSi. The stock muffler mounts are TOTALLY different from the ones on my new Ansa Sport (FE-2620). Brackets are being fabricated as we speak and I hope to have it together by next week. Can't wait! :D

Here are a couple variants using the same flowmaster mufler. I saw the one in black in the old tec forum and had my thermoreactor relaced with the custom set up done at a local muffler shop.

Without the two resonator tips it was a bit loud for cruising, (and i didn't want to attract the CHP). Great sound.

There is a stainless heat shield on top of the muffler, held on by stainless clamps. The system was painted with vht and works well.

    Cost $652
