    I need to change the belt to my compressor. Is there a way to change it without removing the compressor as the pulley is on the inside? Thanks.

    you don't have to remove the compressor, but usually you need to remove the bottom bracket and loosen the top bolts to allow the compressor to drop down enough to get the belt on.

    the idler pulley doesn't take up much slack. How much depends on whether you have spacers on the top bolts.
