I currently have the right side of the engine exposed for another "project" (some of you may have seen the other post). I noticed that the air intake splits into a "Y". The top leads into the air box, but the bottom hose leads to nothing... This car has had all of the emssions equipment removed. I have searched F-chat plus the owner's manual and the parts manual, and I can't find a "non-Y" connector. I have always added high flow cold air intakes on my other performance cars, and it seems that this bottom hose is "robbing" me of cold air into the carbs. Anyone know if a different connector is available?

I have a '77, and mine is just a single outlet into the air cleaner. Could the hose be going over to blow cool air on the cats?

And to help keep the differential cool (due to the proximity to a hotter exhaust manifold/cyl. head on the '78-'79). If your air injection system is disabled your temps will be lower, but it wouldn't hurt to have that in place -- but yours seems way too long (but maybe it's just the photo). Once upon a time, there was a sheet metal hoop tack-welded to that 1st vertical frame member it crosses that held the free end of the smaller hose just peeking past the cam belt cover and pointing towards the diff/manifold area.

what years was that Y split in place on the 308? Anyone know for sure? Sounds like 77 didn't have it but 79 did. I am not sure about my 84. I'll have to look this weekend.

The 84 has it as well. Mine is a flex steel tube similar to a dryer hose. Could this be an attempt to pull warmer air into the intake at startup? US cars used this for years.

Steve is right. it is to blow cool air on the diff.

On the QV's there are two ducts at the extreme end of the frame near the cats. They look like part of the frame, painted black and all, that duct air to the cats. They are under the silver skid plate if you still have it on. You cant miss them when you are under the car. They are about 2 or 3 in round on each side.

I don't remember all that on mine. I think I may be missing some parts.

You don't drag a net behind your car to pick up the pieces that fall off?

    Howdy,
My 85 euro QV has intake air to airbox only.
I had to put cats on (previous thread).
o.k. now i'm REALLY worried about cat temps.....

It looks like the split started with '78 catalytic cars:
