Just had my 1983 QV appraised for the divorce. The appraiser said $34,950 for a car in that shape but since it is red $37,700. This is my appraiser and personally I tink he is abot $10K too high, what do you think?

Most appraisers will quote values that are higher. Think about it...everybody wins, you feel better, the insurance loves them, you will refer them to friends, etc. But are you getting it so you can use it for asset declaration?

Mention to the appraiser what the appraisal is for. He might have to re-evaluate market conditions to re-adjust the price.

I can't believe what this guy did. He put an e-bay ad in the report. Not what the car sold for but what they were asking. And he got the other numbers from something called the black book. I still think he is too high. I mean show me some cars that have actually sold for these numbers.

I had all 7 of my cars in my prenup with VINS listed. This was a path I refused to deal with if that day came...

    Sorry about all this.

I think your appraiser is a numnut and has NO IDEA what he's doing. An extra $2500.00 because the car is red? come on, show me that option in any N.A.D.A. appraisal book! Did he by chance ask when the last service was done? seems like that would carry more weight.

I wouldn't fight it. If you think it's way too high then just take the approach that your soon-to-be ex can have it (and you'll take one-half the value in cash). Be willing to give the car up - that's the only way to get any leverage in the situation.

I'm fortunate to have never been in your position but surely if its a car that you want to keep you have to factor in the cost to you in both money & time of finding a replacement and getting it just so which I would have thought could easily be a few thousand bucks plus at the end you get the satisfaction of having kept the car

Hagerty appraised and insured my 84 QV GTB at $42,500. not sure why you think your price is too high.

i am not going to take less than $35k for my QV GTB, i will plant it in the garage and it can be a barn find 30 years from now.

    good luck with your situation.

For one thing I paid $29 for it, before the economic crash. The way the price of Testarossas, 550's and 355's have crashed in the last two years don't tell me you think 308's have gone up??

Same for my '83 euro. I have Haggerty at 42K and my car is worth every penny of 35K.

You're lucky this guy didn't check the listings for the Barret-Jackson auctions over the past two years. A Blue 83 euro sold for 53K and a Red 85 sold for 57K.

Sounds like you got a good deal on your car when you bought it (depending on the condition). Sorry to hear about your situation, Chris. Good luck with everything.

You have got to be kidding!!!!! Barrettt Jackson is so far from reality it is pathetic that anyone can take it seriously. You've got a bunch of atheletes and entertainers that have annual incomes well into 7 figures using Barrett Jackson as a playground.

I watched one night where a Testarossa with 14K miles sold for $62K and the very next car was a 308 that sold for $64K. DO YOU THINK THAT IS REAL WORLD?

Check the sales prices on e-bay that is more real. (which is where I bought both my Ferrari and my Porsche)

We need to post a poll on this chat room and you'll see 308 owners think 308's are worth a LOT more than non-owners.

Let me first say again that I'm sorry for your situation.

Hopefully you misunderstood me when I said my car is worth 35K (inferring it's not worth 50K), AND I also said you're lucky the appraiser DID NOT check Barret-Jackson. By doing so he might have GREATLY overvalued your car.... which, in your particular situaton, is a bad thing. Perhaps I should have been more clear with my statements.

no hard feelings and again, good luck with your situation.

Chris, what's the mileage on your car? Based on a quick brows through Vast.com, that figure doesn't seem THAT far off.

No doubt it's a buyer's market. But when you're talking about something that is not THAT common (that being a good car under 40,000 miles) combined with the fact that many current owners are head over heals in love (as opposed to owners of a say a 360 or 550), you have a sticky market where buyers have a lot of power, but not all the power as they typically do in a transaction.

People please, stop comparing a 308 or 328 to a new Ferrari. They are very different animals and Ferrari doesn't make cars like the 308 and 328 and they likely never, ever will. The production of small, non-computerized Ferraris is over. THE END.

As far as comparing a 308 or 328 to a testarossa, it's mind blowing that the one time flagship and the little Ferrari are crossing paths in terms of value but they are. And anyone who understands these models and the market knows why that is happening.

No doubt nice, cheap 308 QV can be found. But Chris, if you had to replace your 308 QV with a comparable machine, could you do it for $30,000 in the next six to twelve months?

...and you married a Beauty Queen!

I horse traded with my fiirst wife, she let the Ferrari go "unlisted" and I left her AT&T pension alone, it was about an even trade $30K on both sides...her attorney, a woman... noticed it and was PIZZED!

Keep going Chris, it'll seem 'cheap' in the rear view mirror!

My car has 45,000 original miles. I have tons of documentation, so much so I see the valves were replaced at 7,000 miles probably the poster child for the 3 year belt change.

Could I replace it for $30K I sure think so. I could by one of the $20K ebay cars and 10K buys a lot of parts if you know where to shop.

BTW my car is a euro originally sold out of a dealership in France.

good to read you got a good deal on it. not sure what color your cars is, but yours is also a GTS. my point is in my case, my car is a non red GTB QV, with EPA / DOT papers, so i would think your car would still bring good money, and the appraisal price is on target, unless you just dump it.

as someone already hit on, comparing the 348/355 and other newer cars that are going down in price is totally not fair to the 308's. i have the means to buy nice cars, i CHOOSE to buy older 308's , jalpa's, 911's and so on.

i do not want a 348, 355, 360, 550 and so on, so i dont care how cheap they are. they dont do anything for me as a buyer. i agree some people will just buy a car, any car in $x dollar range. but not everyone is like that.

sorry for the mix up, and for your situation.

i do hope it works out for you.

    Chris,

If your appraiser didn't understand the reason for the valuation (and was trying to 'please' you with a high number), maybe just have him do it again before you submit it?
If that's not an option, how about Cauley or even an independent shop (Kip Sheward perhaps?)

    Just a thought, Bro!

I'm really sorry to hear about your situation and I agree with everyone else who says that perhaps you should explain tot he appraiser what the appraisal is for and have him re-do it. That said, if you have a really nice 308, I think the price was spot on. My 85 QV is appraised at $45k for insurance. Mine is in excellent condition with original paint but has been driven (40k miles now). While I doubt I could get more than upper 30's for it right now in the current market, I would be hard pressed to find one that is in this nice a shape and has been maintained/driven enough so it is guaranteed road worthy. I really think it would take me years to find a replacement so I'm hoping I never have to find one! :)

If you really love your car and it's in great shape, hold on to it. No matter what, you'll get through the current situation and someday you will realize that you are much happier and all will be well.

    Paul
