Hi sorry I'm late to this thread...my car is a May 1984 production car # 51665 with assembly # 268. Metallic black over tan. Its a USA LHD car...
The sense I get from this thread (reading as much as I could before I got bored) is that Assembly Numbers were allocated the same way McDonald's issues Order Numbers: almost arbitrarily. Listing engine numbers would be slightly more interesting, since they are probably more sequential, but even then, the engine assembly shop probably shipped over a few dozen engines at a time which were then randomly assigned Assembly Numbers using official Ferrari masking tape and a purple crayon. It seems to me that Assembly Number would be assigned to a vehicle before it gets its Serial Number. Serial Numbered components (steering column etc.) would be assigned Assembly numbers. Stamping the Serial Number in the engine compartment could be one of the last steps of the assembly process. All the above is, of course, speculative.
I don't think so.... The VINs were assigned to the various models, by year, and sequential (odd only for a long time) The assembly numbers were specific by model, so as all the fitted components, you see them on suspension, and interior bits mostly, were kind of a Work Order number as the car rolled thru assembly. But we have found they do start over with every year model, and they have added letters often to denote the market the car was being optioned for. By the time of the 308, engines were made in big batches, 20? 40? but were also sequential, transmissons too, but there was no particular order to how they got put in, to my knowledge, I picture them on pallets, getting pushed against the wall and dropped in, in no particular care of order.
I think the confusion is, that the Assembly numbers, other than ID to the car for the factory, had NO relation to when the car actually was completed. I think we see cars "passing each other" on the line all the time, in retrospect. "Crap, we ran out of Swiss mufflers!!....German door scoop bird screens???" Pushed off against the wall.... The person with the most money, or Factory pull based upon celebrity, got the car first. I stand to be corrected on any of my understanding.....we should chart all the numbers we know, into a spread sheet and see if the date divines any deeper insight.
Assembly Numbers | F-Register Even the early cars have assembly numbers, called "assembly sequence" then. You can easily read them up from Hilary's Red Book, approx. from page 57 onwards. The first number in the column "NO" gives the ass. seq., second number is the body number
