Mine is a 85 RHD Qv - they only made 233 in total and my build number is 204.... So I am assuming this is the 204th RHD Qv body - not the 204th RHD QV that year? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi TripleBlack - yes originally delivered to South Africa. I am guessing it was assembled in about Mid 1984 as the original TRX wheels were date-stamped April 84, and was first registered in South Africa in January 1985. Chassis 54173. Would love to know when the car was actually manufactured. And as it seems it was the 29th last RHD QV it must have been quite late.
You can ask in english to the factory using this email: [email protected] This is the only information you can get for free at the moment. You just have to send them a copy of your registration card (don't know the name in South Africa). Referring to your chassis number, your conclusion of a mid october built is correct in my opinion. It is out off the topic but I tried to get some information from the SEFAC about all the 308 imported in South Africa from the beginning. I've read that it was not possible to import a left hand drive in the 70's that's why some Italian manufacturer like Alfa or Fiat established their own factory in Brits. Do you know about that ? So Ferrari should have deliver RHD from the RHD sequence as they do for Australian cars but with South African specification (like odometer in Km/h and gauge in F° for example). I would love to learn some more about that market...
Thanks for that information, I shall contact the factory. Re the SA cars - pre-owned LHD cars could be imported privately up until the early 2000's. But new cars were only officially sold by ferrari in RHD. The spec is the UK spec - but as you correctly point out the odometer is in km and the temp gauges in F. It is very difficult to say how many may have been sold officially. I would estimate that there might be about 60 308's in SA today. However some of the original allocation have obviously been wrecked, many have been re-exported, and quite a few of the existing 308's are imported left hand drives that weren't part of the original allocation.
That's very interesting, thank you. Are you a member of the Southern Equitorial Ferrari Automobili Club ? I have tried to contact them but no answer at all, even to say they are not interested.... 70's and 80's periods are for me, very rich and interesting for all the production changes. I would love to talk with a South African carbureted 308 to learn about those specifications that might be different from a UK RHD standard (bumper, lights, engine...)
So we have 1 behind the rear seat 2 the headlight bucket bracket. 3 the plate that hides the hinges. 4 And the next spot I found is the bottom lip that the door panel screws into also has the chassis number
Sorry I can't post photos here. But they are in the thread. Except for the one on the door lip I discovered last month
On the backside of the rear seat on the gt4 is a big hand painted number. Looks like very Italian penmanship !
I found that on mine also. From memory, it is also on the underside of the transmission tunnel cover, but I couldn't swear to it. Paul
Chassis #19815 1976 registration Rhd Euro dry sumped vetro Build #67 Number 67 seen stamped on oil cooler bracket, and in engine bay on right hand side inner arch. Located in Ireland. Ive owned it since 2006.
Engine is 344, ill edit original post. Ill check washer nozzles tomorrow Black flat prancing horse on front grille.
Washer nozzles stick out about 15 -20mm as far as I can tell, definitely not recessed. Any idea what the other number on the plate is? DGM 15346?
