I ordered a new set of 4 brake hoses from Superperformance for my '83 308 QV. The ends do not match my originals. The new ones have (outside) threaded ends that do not match the factory originals, which take the "U" clips to retain the hose to the chassis brackets.

I've contacted SP but no response yet.

Should I return them or is this what is available these days?
Should I find a nut to fit and "bolt" each end through the bracket(s)? I think the threads are 16mm x 1.5.

    Thanks for any input.

I recently got a set of hoses for my '78 308 from Dan at Ricambi, and they are like the ones you got from Superformance. But the '78 used nuts that go on the outer threads to hold them in place, along with a locking flange. Can you use these hoses with a nut on them, in place of the U clip? If you look at the fitting between the threads and the hex, it looks like it is made to work with the U clip as well. You might try putting one of them in place and seeing if the U clip will work. Just a thought.

I agree. It looks like the new ones are threaded on the inside to attach the solid brake lines, and the outer threads are used to attach them to the support bracket with the supplied nut. Did it come with a mounting nut?

No nuts came with them. And my "U" clips do not fit into the slot you mentioned. Anyway, that slot is also too close to the hex surface to clear the backet thickness. Still no word from SP (Colin?) either.

I guess I need to start a nut search if I plan to do the hose swap soon................

    Thanks for your inputs guys.

Yes, I think you have it - the end design has deleted the U clip attachment method in lieu of a separate nut to hold the hose end in place.

Personally, I believe the new nut design has advantages over that funky U clip style, which has always struck me as being fiddly. The nut is much easier to install / remove / tighten.

Find a thin profile jam nut of the proper diameter and thread pitch for the hose end, and you are Good To Go.

And, at the risk of veering off-topic, seems like this would have been a good opportunity to have upgraded to SS braided hoses, which SuperFormance also sells. Any specific reason why you did not do this, since you will be swapping hoses anyways?

    Cheers - DM

Cost maybe...also IIRC some countries do not permit SS lines without teflon outer protection.....

Remember, the threads are metric. If you go to an auto parts store or a fastener store (we have a great industrial supply place near here that carries every imaginable fastener), you should be able to find a thin nut to use to mount them with. I agree with the comment that the nut is a good way to fasten. But try to get a locking tab washer or plate that you bend the ears down on to hold the nut from spinning. There is a lot of vibration at both ends of that hose, and you don't want the lock nut working loose.

I have metric taps and dies here in my shop and a complete set of thread pitch gauges. The metric nut will need to be a 16mm x 1.5 pitch. My search is on. I like the idea of the bent washer too...thanks.

Cost was the main factor. I'm not tracking my car either (i.e. no long hard braking sessions). The extra funds I have are going towards other items such as replacement fuel lines, caliper piston seals, etc.

The black hoses should last the next 4-6 years I figure, which may be longer than my ownership time since I may upgrade to a newer 308 model ('85) or even a 328.

    Bob,

If I were you I would get a refund for the rubber lines. I purchased all four lines in stainless from Porterfield with the correct fittings for $84. They fit perfectly with no leaks and utilized the existing clips. Here's a photo of the invoice so you will know what to order.

Colin at SP has offered to exchange the rubber (black) hoses for the SS ones, which he says have nuts but a different thread size. He does not have nuts for the black hoses. He also thinks my old hoses w/the clips are not correct for my car (???). Comments?

Yours are correct - identical to the ones I took off my car and replaced with the stainless ones from Porterfield.
