I have a 1978 308 GTS. I am the original owner. It has 30,000 miles. I am currently rebuilding the brakes calipers because one is sticking. While the brake pads (originals) don't need to be replaced, based on wear, I would like to replace them as they are a really old composition. I do only street driving, no track. Which pads would you recommend?

I JUST did an extensive search on this very issue, looking at modern "upgrade" pads. The two brands most frequently mentioned were EBC and Porterfield R4-S. There were gripes and positives about both, but more gripes about too much dust produced by the EBCs, so I'm leaning toward Porterfield.

    Man, that's really cool !!!!

For street use I really like the Ferodo DS 2500. Don't need the "heating up" that race pads do, no exessive dust, and superb instant stopping power when you need it. Carbone Loraine LC5 is also a very nice compound, not shure if it's available for 308's. Both might be more "european" brands, not shure about the availability in the USA.

    Original owner. Well done sir.

How many miles or on those rotors? They're readily available and cheap ish for a full set of 4 now. About $500 from Rutlands.

These aren the original rotors. They look good, smooth. I haven't measured thickness yet. Do you know the specs for thickness?

Just for information purposes, front brakes are the same as a 1984 911. New calipers are not that expensive.

How about GiroDisc Pads for street use. I've used the 328 version of these pads on my car for the past 20,000 miles.

fronts require a minimum thickness of 20mm and rears require 18mm. This goes for any part on the disc, so if it's 19.5mm at some inner part of the disc but 20.5mm at some other area, replace them. Resurfacing a disc with a low point of say 20.5mm will bring it down usually .5mm or more and this places you right at the end of spec. This has always been -imo- a half fix as most heat treating is directly at the surface of a disc meaning the resurface is not hardened and will wear or warp too quickly.

There is a very old thread by Enjoythemusic, that comes to the same conclusion, after extensive track research.

WHAT kind of whiney boy worries about BRAKE DUST???
    :D :D :D

EBC has a good rep, as far as I know!

I've no idea what pads I currently have but I am about to buy Raicam pads (from Superformance).

Looking at the vast array of opinions, unless you are tracking the car or a getaway driver, I don't think there can be much between them.
