Hi - a couple of quick questions. This w/k I put new pads on my rear brakes (308). In order to retract the inner piston, you have to remove the little cap. I have read, and now agree with, that removing this thing is a PITA, and you end up "chiseling" it to loosen. I read somewhere on F-Chat (I have it printed out) a procedure for adjusting the handbrake, and the writer (I think it was Ric Rainbolt) said something along the lines of "These caps are a PITA to remove - I generally replace the cap with a stainless steel one" So - my (long winded) first question is - Where do you get either a replacement cap or a replacement stainless steel one (if that's what people recommend) ? I looked in the F parts manual and this is not listed as a "part". My other question is - I drained the oil from engine / gear / transfer case. Does anyone know the torque you should tighten the plugs to when you put them back in ? ditto for the gear / transfer case fill plugs ? I looked in the workshop manual and couldn't find. I seem to remember 20 ft/lbs but i'm not sure ? Thks Jason
Jason, Not sure, but you might contact Daniel at Ricambi and ask him about the part. He's been very helpful to me. Also, T. Rutland, if Daniel doesn't have it. As for tightening, first, be sure to replace the copper washers with new ones, or anneal and resurface the old ones if you're going to reuse them. Best is to get new ones. When you get them installed, hand tighten them snug, and then give them about another 1/8 of a turn. The trick is to tighten them just enough to keep them from leaking. You don't want to overtighten or you can strip them (steel plug in an aluminum case). Hope that helps, Steve
The filler plug on my transfer case was ridiculously tight and almost impossible to get undone. I guess from corrosion or the last garage service. In any case I certainly didn't re-tighten it any more than necessary. Finger tight plus a bit.
I noticed the same on mine...I think it might be wise to put a dab of anti-seize grease on the threads before reinstalling.
That inboard "plug" for the 308 rear brake caliper can be purchased from 914 Porsche aftermarket suppliers -- e.g.: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/images/brakes/caliper-plug.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/9144/POR_9144_BRKhyd_pg1.htm#item5 -- near the bottom "Caliper Plug, Inner, 914"
