Can anyone advise of best practices here? When changing and reinstalling the cam seals (US Spec 84 QV), is it advised to: - Apply builder grease (or motor oil) to the cam lobes? - Apply builder grease (or motor oil) to the surface of seal #45 (in picture)? Specifically, the surface that touches the cam shaft. - Apply builder grease (or motor oil) to the surface (that touches the cam shaft) of seal #3 (in picture)? - Apply permatex/sealant/hondabond to the surface of gasket #3 that touches the distributor plate (#1 in picture). Note, upon removal of this seal, it was observed that a white sealant was used in this location during a prior service. Any advise given your prior experience is appreciated. I did a search first, but didn't find anything indicating the specific procedure to use, especially regarding the seal (#3) in the distributor plate. Phil Image Unavailable, Please Login
Phil, I usually apply a very light film of oil on the lobes and ends that ride inside the seals, just to avoid any binding on the seals when installing them. Wade
Thanks Wade. The seals themselves, and the O-ring, they go in dry I presume? I plan on wiping down the seal covers with kerosene first, to make sure there is no residual corruption on the surface left from removal....there was some white silicone used by the prior service technician on the cam sprocket side. I'll tell ya, removing the cam seals (the ones behind the sprocket) was no fun. Not sure where I had more fun today, removing those seals, or the sleeves between the fuel tanks and rigid crossover pipe. Actually, it was all fun, Phil
