I had a tune-up last summer on my 308 GTB but the carbs lost their settings after a couple weeks, the screws didn't stay in place. They carbs also drip small amounts of fuel while the engine is running so i'm guessing they are well over due to be rebuilt. Is this an easy DIY job? If not, how much can I expect to pay a competent mechanic to do it?

    Thanks....

Depending on what is leaking really. If the leak is from a bad accelerator pump diaphragm, or a gasket then it is not a major issue. If the leak occurs from the hinge points of the butter flys then you may have a housing/shaft wear issue.

Assuming the leak is the diaphragm or gaskets, it is as simple of a carb to build that I have seen yet. Kits are cheep, (not all parts are needed in the kits sense they cover other models) and you should be able to rebuild each carb taking your time and slow going in about 2 hours. that is cleaning all the pieces, setting the floats, disassembly and reassembly, with little or no experience before. Do your home work on setting the carbs up before you install them so that tuning and such doesn't drive you crazy.

Also, the best cleaner in a spray can in my opinion is Brake parts cleaner from Autozone. you will get a lot of variation in this field, but it cleans great, and leaves no film. Again, that brand specifically. Not any off brand at wal-mart or something, but Autozone. You want the one that used to be Albany brake parts cleaner.

Get some small brushes, and you're good to go.

I've just cleaned, rejetted and synch'ed my car and its running so much better now, I enjoyed doing it and learned a lot in the process. It's not something I thought I would have attempted myself untill I read that other people were doing it on this site. I found these pages and guides very helpfull and make sure you've got a copy of the workshop manual (The GT4 one is just as good for carbs) which you can download for free from Gerrit's Dino site here: http://www.dino308gt4.com/Ferrari/

These are very helpfull links too:

P.S. to download the shop manual its on the download page of Gerrit's site.

also, as an aside, I would have probably posted this question on the Technical Q&A forum. you'd probably get more responses that way.

    Cheers
    Scotty.
