OK does any one have any experiance with a clutch explosion where the failure keeps you from removing the bellhousing. Thats what I have here. I can't get the bellhousing off T/O bearing caught in the preasure plate. Any sugestions on how to seperate the two? Do not want to destroy the bell housing getting to the clutch. All input is appreciated.

If in fact it is just the TO brng stuck to the pressure plate the brng is only held to the release fork by a spring clip and carefully prying the bell housing off should overcome the spring. You should also explore the possibility of disconnecting the lever at the bottom of the fork pivot shaft allowing the fork to just roll out from under the spring as the bell housing is removed.

How did the clutch blow up? It's rare, but I have seen it.

I'm not familiar with the 308 at all so I'm not sure if this will work for you, but I once had a similar situation on a non-F. car. What I ended up doing was to undo all the bell-housing bolts and other items so that the housing is ready to come off. I then got a friend to SLOWLY press the clutch pedal so that the t/o bearing pushes the housing off. You need to go very slowly. Once the housing is 1/4" or 1/2" off the block face you can get some wood or pry-pars in there to slowly work the cover off. Try not to gve in to temptation to bash-the-heck out of the housing.

If this doesn't work you could investigate a slide hammer or perhaps a hydraulic dent puller or similar.

    Good luck.

You can do many different things. My bell housing was stuck as well but the TO bearing wasn't stuck. The TO bearing is probably not your problem. Use wooden wedges and double check to make sure all of your nuts/bolts are removed. It will come off. Take your time and watch the lower shaft as this is what was holding my bell housing on.

I have not done a 308 in a long time but isn't there a shaft with a snap ring on it that prevents the BH from coming off? You have to take the tranfer gear cover off and the gears to take the intermediate plate out then you can see the shaft? Geeze it has been too many years....

Yes that is the lower gear. I assumed that he removed the snap ring and lower gear.

fatbillybob is spot on - if you look at the picture you have to remove the lower drop gear (#9, and make sure you mark the gear before removing, this applies to the other gears if you remove them) then the large circlip (#17), the bearing (#12), the spacer (#15) and the snap ring (#16)

I would recommend replacing the snap ring on re-assembley

Was that disc new or rebuilt when it was installed? Can you tell from the markings on the hub? It's kinda unusual for a spring to just go AWOL.

Also, what did you wind up doing to get the bell housing off?

not sure if this was a rebuild or factory but this clutch was not original to the car. did learn a technique to seperate the engine and bell housing. This takes 2 people. one must turn the engine while the other removes the preasure plate bolts from the flywheel one at a time. this is a slow process but does work. glad to have it apart. note the bolts must be removed from the inspection port at the top of the bell hosing
