The clutch on my 308 QV will not engage all the way. First of all, the clutch has recently seemed to move back some. It takes a longer distance to push in the pedal. Next, when i push the clutch in all the way, I cannot put the car in Reverse without grinding gears and when it is in gear, the car automatically starts moving forward or back depending on the gear. But this is when the clutch is pushed all the way in!!

    Please help.

    Thanks,
    Branden

    Also, a separate problem:

The car seems to be holding back power in the lower RPMs till It gets past 5k. The car also sounds like a broken lawnmower or something. I think it may be an exhaust leak or something. It does NOT sound like a Ferrari should. The exhaust also backfires a lot when coming down from high RPMs.

    Thanks for your help.

The shifting problem & moving with the pedal down is characteristic of a clutch disc not releasing.

    The possibilities are:

    - a piece of the clutch disc has broken off & is jammed between the disc & flywheel, keeping the clutch from fully releasing.

    - The clutch cable's become stretched (probably due to it being frayed).

    - Something's gone wrong with the clutch linkage between the cable & the bell housing. (least likely)

The clutch on these cars is pretty simple & easy to service, but requires a special tool for the transfer gear ring-nut.

If you think something is wrong with the motor quit driving it. Have it towed to someone to fix it. It does not get cheaper to address the longer you run it. The inverse is true and the bill can go up so fast you cant believe it.

So should I take it to the dealer...ugh...or should someone else be able to fix it for cheaper?

    Thanks for your replies.

It's not rocket science. Find someone that knows what they are doing. If you don't know what it needs, take it to a dealer unless you've got someone you really trust. "Learning" on a Ferrari is expensive for the owner.

    Also, have it towed.

Do the 308s have any sort of fluid (transmission or otherwise) used for the clutch?

My dad had an Alfa Romeo that had the same problem and said he had to add fluid to a cylinder for the clutch.

    Thanks

the 308/328 clutch system is purely mechanical..no hydraulics.

I'd bet that the cable has frayed and stretched as verell suggested.
jack up the drivers side and look underneath where the cable exits a tube from the front of the car, passes over a pulley that is often crudded up, and stretches back to the lever arm on the bell housing.

the cable often frays where it rubs against the frozen pulley wheel (see pic).
Fix is a new clutch cable.

If you are really lucky, the cable tension adjusting turnbuckle came loose and there is just slack in the cable. Fix would be to adjust and lock down the turnbuckle.

Doesn't the 308QV have a slave cylinder to leak air into? My 85 mondial QV does. It is an easy task to bleed the slave...

nope. It's the same system that dates back to the early carb cars.

the Mondial's was a testbed for the upcoming 328 system
