spring finally made it to cape cod and i did the clutch and steering rack on my 81 308 yesterday. thanks for all your advice last fall. i used the great instructions posted on camerafilters.com. unfortunately i wasn't real lucky. the race and bearing behind the lower gear were really frozen on and required a torch (my favorite outboard mechanic tool) and a serious puller on the bell housing studs to get them out. i gather from the article and talking to someone else who did a 308 clutch that they came out very easily. anyway the point of this is that it may be tougher in the backyard then you think.
and finally, i had to make a four pronged socket for the gear nut as described in the article. so, if you live in southern new england and need it for a clutch job let me know. regards, jon s.

Awesome job. I've done both jobs on my car, and know how fun they can be....

To do both in a day is quite a job- you must not goof off much like I seem to.
Please post some pix if you took some.

Where did you get the steering rack? They seem to be getting in short supply these days.

    Again- good job.

thanks verell - i should have known. next time i'll call you before i spend an hour grinding a 12 point socket. i should have added that i took the car to friends that have a lift. i'd still be there if i did the work on the ground - especially the rack. no pics, the camerafilter article is really good and there isn't much to see on the rack. i got the rack from t rutlands (maranello), a rebuild. it's pretty stiff right now, but they told me it will wear in in a thousand miles or so. best of all we set the toe by eye for the ride home; 0.1 degrees of toe in each wheel on the machine the next day. never happen again in a million years. regards, jon s. p.s. had to take .012" off the face of the fly wheel - the old clutch was slipping beacause someone had slapped the previous one over a non-true flywheel and only about a third of the face was active.

i think $1,500 is going rate for clutch job. There is about 6 hours (i think) to do it. When i had mine done, i asked for all bearing and whatnot to be replaced above and beyond, plus if you are doing the clutch i suggest getting the rear main seal replaced as it is right there.

That seems to be about par, the flywheels seem to warp a bit during the life of the 1st clutch.

My flywheel needed 0.014" to true it up. This was my car's 1st clutch change at 35,000 miles, the disc was only about 80% down, & no signs of hot spots. Flywheel wear was so light I almost considered just changing the disc, but then I put a dial indicator on it to check for warpage & runout. Good thing I did.

    Verell,

When you cut a flywhell like you did, is there a way to ensure balance?

Yes,was an extra $100 for the machine shop to balance the flywheel (they drill shallow holes on the heavy side, like the factory did). Didn't take much to balance the flywheel, 1 hole I think.

Then they balanced the flywheel-pressure plate combination. Turned out that the pressure plate needed about 20g of weight added on to bring it into balance.

They TIG welded a couple of pieces of 1/8" x 1/2" steel onto the light side. Then fine tuned the balance by grinding a bit off of one of the weights.

    Thanks Verell,

I understand the remedies, but how do they measure the balance? Seems like they need a preblalanced crank shaft or special purpose fixture to mout the flywheel and clutch assembley so that it can be spun on a crank balancing machine?
