    Hi Guys.

I need to replace a faulty coil on my late 308 GT4 which has single dizzy with stock breakerless ignition and twin coils in those stylish heatsinks. Most aftermarket coils seem to require a ballast resistor when used to replace a coil that normally runs at 12V rather than 9-ishV. Does any one have any experience of using an aftermarket coil straight out of the box ? Or does anyone know if the stock 308 breakerless system provide to its coils 9V ?

    Replies gratefully received.

    Giles Amos, London.

These same coils with the heatsink were used on Fiats as well and can be obtained through those outlets that deal with classic Fiats/Lancias. If I'm not mistaken, the modern Marelli replacement is either a BK1 or BK2 coil (I'm not sure though...).

I replaced mine with the High Vibration environment units made by MSD, don't have the catalog number at hand but they seem to work well. The other factor was the ability to mount horizontal, as you are not supposed to do that with oil filled units, but our OEM were!

    Thanks for that.

I have since checked the coil positive feed at tickover and can confirm that it is the full 12V.

In the end I got a Marelli coil from Superformance. I'm not totally convinced that it isn't designed for points ignition cars and meant to have for a 9v feed via a ballast resistor, but it's working at the moment. If it gets cooked, I will post again...
