In disassembling my pass side axle & CV joints to replace the torn boots I found that the two cone shaped (thrust?) washers that rest against the axles inner shoulders and inboard against the CV joints were oriented in opposite directions. I would expect them both to be the same - with the convexed surface towards the shaft shoulder - i.e. middle of the axle shaft to create minor tension on the snap ring clip that goes on the outer ends of the CV joints & shaft. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Should these washers be flat? Does it matter? My instinct is to place them as in this photo if they are to remain coned so as to allow some spring action to the axle as it later slides in and out on the splines.

There are indeed thrust washers...and should have an arc to them. Orientation is the same, regardless of position. The larger side (open) faces the CV joint, as to exert outward pressure, hence pushing the CV joint against the snap ring.
