I'm replacing both passenger side boots. I understand both boots can be replaced by just undoing one end of the axle. The 6 allen bolts are off. The axle is hanging. The circlip is removed from the axle end. The boot clamps are off. Now I expect the CV joint and boot to slip off the axle. Not happening. Am I missing something? Is there something on the other side of the joint inside the boot that needs to be undone? Car is 1978 GTS. It seems like the splined part of the joint is not moving on the axle splines at all and I'm thinking it should just slide right off.

Pull the axle all the way out of the car. Be sure you're using an 8mm hex on your ratchet rather than an Allen key or you'll be forever! I can't imagine doing this job with the shaft halfway in the car still, not much good access to get the boot on and then manipulate the clamp!
And yes, it's a light press fit, so you'll have to jar it free it a little. I did it by orienting the shaft vertically and just picking it up a few times by the joint I was trying to get off.

Thanks guys. I'll get a little more forceful with it. Using an 8mm hex socket I managed to strip one of the inside bolts so started thinking I would do both boots with only one end loose. Then I'm thinking the only correct way to do the job is with the entire axle assembly out. So, time to get a Dremel tool and cut the nut off the stripped out bolt. Access is going to be tight though.
