My 1977 308 GTB has a few dash rattles very evident on bumpy roads, mainly on the right side, around/over/behind the fuse box.

Is this an impossible find/fix? Seems like it would involve pulling out the dash, looking for loose bits, tying them down, then replacing the dash, possibly causing new, worse rattles?

Anybody have any experience in this area? Advice welcome...

These rattles take away from the otherwise very pleasant driving experience!

    TIA,
    Greg

A lot of the rattles are a product of the vinyl bits rubbing against eachother causing more sqeakes than rattles. Removing the dash is a window out procedure and I do not recommend it. Try lubricating rubbing points with a little Vaseline (save the jokes for later) and this will help a lot with the noise. These cars are not screwed together like a Mercedes so some noise is part of the deal.

My noises are more rattles than squeaks, like something is loose.....

Take a phillips and flathead and go through the car and tighten every screw you see. You would be surprised how many have loosened up over the years, especially if the trim, seats etc...were previously removed.

I've had good luck using STP Son of a Gun (similar to Armor All), and spray it into said "squeeky/rubbing points"...got rid of most of the noises.

I've heard on chat boards that the common dealership fix (Ford/GM/etc.) is to aim a can of silicone spray up under the dash and empty half the can....yuck. But apparently effective.

OK, dumb question, but how am I supposed to get to any squeaking/rubbing points within the dash, without dissassembling it?

I guess you guys mean where all the dash panels/door panels touch?
I can try that, but I think my problem lies deep within......

Why don't you drive around with a friend and have him search around as it rattles. Eventually, if he pushes on enough stuff you should find it.

With my 308 gts I had a rattle that I thought was coming from the dash or steering column. It turned out it was the roof latch that was rattling when the roof was off and stored behind me. I know this sounds crazy but you would swear that the rattle was coming from the dash. It still sounds that way even though I've proven what it is. I read from your profile that you have a gtb, so obviously it is not the roof panel, but I am just suggesting it could be somewhere else. Is absolutely everything out of the car? Good luck.

    Greg,
have you pulled the piece of dash in front of the fusebox and checked in there? There's lots of wires, a board holding the relays, the fuse blocks, all kinds of stuff that can rattle in there.

I had a rattle in the area under my e-brake handle. When I opened it up, I had a loose control cable for the heater that was rattling against something else. Man, I was glad to fix that one. It was really annoying.

Sometimes rattles are very hard to find because they rattle against something and it sounds like its coming from another spot. I had a rattle in my Toyota that sounded for all the world like it was coming from under the speedo unit someplace in the dash. I finally found the source of the rattle...in the door!

Now that you mention it, I recently noticed my rear view mirror was rattling, because the dimmer tab had broken off inside. Maybe that's it....

I'll check behind my (your!) fuse block/panel for any loose items--might find something.

Anybody know a source/have for sale a 308/328 rear view mirror? I've never seen one on Ebay or elsewhere......

I had one of the round fans in the front fenders come loose and the rattle sounded like it was in the dash as it was being transmitted through the bulkhead. You can check this by keeping the headlamp pods up and looking behind them.
