    Hi Guys

I am busy fixing a left hand diff oil seal and re-packing the cv's. after succesfully removing the cv's, cv flange and diff seal carrier/plate, I noticed quite a bit of play on the splined shaft.

Is this normal and does it go away when the cv flange is fastened due to the tapered bearing?

Look forward to hear your comments.

    Regards

Yes this would be normal. The CV joint flange locates the splined shaft in the correct axial position as it acts against the outer race of the bearing.

With the CV joint flange removed there is nothing to stop the splined shaft and differential gear inside, from being pushed inwards until it limits inside the diff.

Thanks Andy-now it all makes sense and I can sleep well-was having expensive visions of diff and gearbox overhauls.
