I'm currently removing both axles to replace a leaking CV boot. At the same time, I'm going to replace both differential axle seals- one side leaks.

Has anyone done this that has any tips, photos, advice?

It looks like the seal is mounted in a removable holder/carrier on the driver side, but is in the differential itself on the driver side? Is this true? I haven't removed the axles yet, so I really haven't had a good look.

Also, do I just put an impact wrench on the big bolt (after removing the axle of course) that holds the flange to the differential to remove it, gaining access to the seal behind?

What sealants should I be using for this job? Permatex 518 Anaerobic?

Thanks in advance, and I will post a proceedure after with photos-

i hated this job! and i did 3 times in 2 days!!! got it down to a 45min job.

leason #1 anerobic sealant. both axles have to come off the diff side, but of your doing CV joints the they're coming off anyways. the bolt is a 19mm with a large panwasher. the shaft carrier is hollow and oil will flow to the bolt, hence the need for anerobic sealant.

i know i posted some pics last yr or earlier this yr on this job. to install the new seals requires some patience and a large driver to set it in straight. T-rutlands carries the new double lip seals made of viton.

    any questions ask away!

    Thanks Scott-
So, my leak may just be coming through the bolt threads?

I assume the gearbox needs to be drained? I'm going to try Redline MTL.

Lastly- the axle seals are installed differently depending on which side- correct?
Is one just pressed into the diff casing itself, but the other is in a removable carrier like the QV cam seals?

I couldn't find any photos on FChat, would you mind posting a few that you might have?

    Thanks in advance-
