I ran a timing check on my car this weekend. I am having a problem with my exhaust manifold on one bank getting hot. Well I did an advance check on both banks. Front bank was perfect. Back bank was terrible. Not getting full advance & at idle the timming marks are moving about 2 - 4%. Everyone on ferrarichat told me to check my timing. My car is currently running dual XR700's. I have been told that my advance mech in the dist. is probably dirty and sticking. How do you take the dist apart to get to the adv. mech. or would it be in my best interest to have a local ferrari shop do the job for me as he has a dist machine and can do both dist. and match the advance curves. All the old post talk about how much better these cars run after having the dissy's rebuilt. What do you guys think?

Your second idea (sending them out) is the better one. Don't forget just because you have electronic ign you still have to pull and service the distributors at least every 15k miles.

On a related note, Who do "YOU GUYS" suggest to set up the advance curve and bring "it" into the 20th century. I recall reading that the 308's have a less than optimum advance curve, (by no less a wizard than the 4.0 L 308 engine guy).

Frankly, I am amazed that the 308 does not have a vacuum advance. Since we are not really running at wide open throttle all of the time, it makes sense to have a "part throttle" advance to compensate for the significantly reduced charge density at cruise.

Just about every 60's and 70's era car had it - untill everything went computer. Why not Ferrari????

Lord Knows everyone bemoans the relatively pitiful fuel economy of the 308, even "The Owner's Manual" indicates that you can expect about 8 mpg.

I know that real race cars do not run vacuum advance, but I am not just a mechanical purist, (don't want to have to deal with the nebulous, complex electronic gizmos, but I am also a mizerly enthusiast).

So, I guess I have two questions: Who can set up the advance curve for best power and second, does anyone set up a vacuum advance mechanism for the 308 to achieve some economy.

Ferrarifixer, I know I am a cheap Bas*ard, but go ahead and humor me anyway :)

Even though I have an Allen Dist. machine I have not got it totally tuned in yet. I just set my points using a feeler gauge, set the timing and the car runs flawlessly. Maybe im lucky? I have the original advance mech and can not bear to change them. I understand why you guys do it but want to keep my car stock, well except for well you know...........

This is the plan. A local Vintage Ferrari tech. Andy Greene Sports and Race Cars has a dist machine. I plan on taking the car to him and having him rebuild the bad dist. and the good one. Make sure that both advance curves match perfectly. Once this is done the car will be 100%. Can't wait.
