Hey guys, is there a difference between the QV and 2V?

I'm at the crossroads... do I throw more into my QV's block or look into getting a clean one and starting anew. My heads, crank, timing cover, etc. are all clean, but the block itself is not.

Long story short, a head stud stripped and in the course of getting it out, the machine shop I was using warped the block a bit and then when they went to do the decks, zero the crank, etc. they did a sloppy job. I found a better machine shop, at the recommendation of a friend, who just finished doing a 250GT block, so that part of the situation is looking up, but I'm still facing the block's tolerances being all over the map.

To use my block, they'll have to bore it and either sleeve it for the stock liners, or go to darton sleeves. And, we'll probably have to cut the pistons as they were 11:1 and with the decks cut now they will be getting up there (and piston to head clearance will be getting tight). And, at this point, it would pay to swap to ARP head studs and nuts as I'm not confident in how the studs were replaced when this whole ordeal started.

I vaguely recall a thread on the QV vs 2V, but couldn't find it with the search. It would make things a bit easier to find a block if I can use either one. For that matter, does anyone have a lead on a used block?

Thanks Sam, that's exaclty the one I was thinking of.

It looked like the oil drain was the only thing preventing it from working. With the block at the machine shop already though it would seem that could be remedied. QV blocks seem to be a bit difficult to come by, as I'm learning.

In the thread you mentioned you knew someone who had a 2V. Are they still selling it?

    Good day Bret,

    You are welcome!

As for the 2V block, the one referred to in the thread was originally mine that I sold to a fellow on Ebay. After he received it he mentioned to me that he was going to use it with 4V heads... which prompted me to create the original thread. Bob may still have the block. I will e-mail him to see if this is the case. If so, then I will provide him with your info (f-chat handle).

    Cheers,

    Sam

What kind of shop was doing your work?

I do a serious background check on machine shops and review their work closely before I ever drop off engine parts. They have to absolutely impress me before I hand them antique, exotic or even my daily drivers parts.

As you have just found out, there are too many shops out there that use their un-calibrated bearing files on Chevy cranks and antique boring bars drilling holes in blocks and dont have the knowledge or ability to rebuild a lawn mower engine to satisfactory specs.

Brett, you can put 4 valve heads on a 2 valve block with a few minor mods if you know what you are doing. Sorry to hear about your block. I have some blocks avail if you are still looking for one.
