I have a 1985 QV and just recently noticed a ticking noise in the engine. This noise seems to comes intermittently when the engine is warmed up, but more often than not. The car has 25,000 miles and aside from this noise it runs perfectly. Does anyone have ideas or suggestions what this noise may be and how to fix?

    Thanks,
    C & G

It could be that its always been there and you've never noticed

It could be the cam belt cover slightly loose and expanding with heat to quieten

It could be a heat shield developing a crack

    It could be tappets

It could be any number of a very long list - a little more precision would help please

is it more pronounced after the car has been standing for a few days and stops after the engine has been running for a few minutes ?

If so it may be the cambelts , no issue , just use it more often

where are you exactly ? if you are in the north Toronto area, i could have 'listen' for you. far too expensive a motor to take ANY chances with.
regardless of where you are, get an experienced Ferrari tech to listen to the problem. better safe then sorry...

Im in the Vancouver area. After bringing the car to temperature it took some turning off and on and reving it to get the ticking noise. Once the ticking was audible, (engine warm) we used a stethescope to hear different parts of the engine. There was no audible ticking around the valve cover/valve area but the ticking was audible in the mid valley area. By increasing the RMP a tad the sound was still there and maybe a bit more prominent. This is as far as we got today. Any input?

Is your ticking variable with RPM or constant?, if variable with RPM suggest you try the following, just in case...

I suggest that you use your stet on the nuts that hold the front and rear belt tensioners tensioned (i.e. though the timing belt cover holes).

If one appears to be louder/ rougher than the other/ more vibration, then it is possible that you may have a slightly loose lock nut on the lower cam drive gears. This can cause an intermittent ticking to start with, which developes over time into a permanant and louder ticking. I had a similar situation, it was only intermitent at first but over time became a fixture to the point where the woodruff was damaged and I needed to remove engine to replace lower cam drive shaft, drive gear, locknut and woodruff.

The issue with this problem is that it sounds like a top end tappit type noise due to the way that sound is resonated in the engine bay, but it is actually a bottom end issue.

    Hope it is not this.

When I was inspecting the 328 that I bought, it made a ticking/clicking sound when the engine was cold but went away after the engine was completely warmed up. A quick call to a good ferrari mechanic, and he said that it was the auxiliary belts. Part of the final deal was that the seller replace all 3 aux belts. If the sound is still there after warm-up, then it could be one as others have suggested above, Good luck and keep us posted.
