Question - is there a gasket between the engine and the trans housing, or should one just put a light coat of silicone sealant on the joining surfaces?

There is no gasket. You can use a good grade of silicone sealer or an anaerobic sealer like Loctite 518.

Mine is apart too and there is no gasket, just the original silicone. The modern sealants are much better than the old stuff they used originally. Two of the studs in mine were snapped off, hence my terrible oil leak.
