Rather simple question for those who have pulled their 308 engines. Have you mounted the engine on a conventional engine stand, and if so, where did you bolt it onto the block? (A picture would be be great.)

Search the archives for the JWise timing drive repair. Should be several pix of his engine on the stand while we were doing it.

Then engine/transaxle assembly is pretty heavy. Get a stand that has a U shaped base, like the one we used:
    http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200305217&R=200305217
    or this one:
    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=4420

They're sturdier & more stable than ones like this:

    http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=200305219&R=200305219

This one should work also, mount the engine using the motor mount studs. It's very similar to the one the FNA shops use:
    http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=406688&R=406688

Tip: Use thick washers around the studs so that the engine stand sleeves don't mark up the softer Al around the studs.

I believe we may have removed some studs & used longer bolts as well.

You asked for a pic. This is one of the heavier duty ones, rated at 1000 pounds. However, I did not hang in on there with the gearbox. I seperated the units on a hydraulic lift table and lifted the motor off the gearbox with an engine hoist. The motor is attached with bolts and spacers using the threaded holes where I removed engine to clutch housing studs. Sorry I didnt get a pic of the backside. If I had more space I would make up a stand like Ferrari uses. I think its a stronger and more stable way of holding the motor.

As Verell said- we mounted it (after removing the spacer behind the bell housing) to the block studs that hold the spacer and bell. Worked great. The negative is that the flywheel is now off, which can come in handy during timing, and locking the engine for various proceedures. Not that big of deal.

    Here is one:
