I have viewed the comments in the forum with great interest for some time and as a new member with a 1978 308+2 of just 3weeks old, have a question which some one may be able to help me. My car had a major rebuild in 1994 which supposedly produced an updated injected moter and transmission. Is there any way moter year of manufacture can be established say by engine No or other. My speedo reads about !7% slow. Is this an indication that the gear box is not origional, or is there another reason. Thanks in anticipation guys. Love the price of F cars in US they are at least 50% higher in oz

Didn't quite understand all of this, and I'm guessing you might have a 308GT4 (??) but from what I've read on this forum a 17 percent speedo error is large but possible. I think wrong-sized tires - ones that change the original diameter of the wheel/tire assembly - are a more likely cause than an aftermarket gearbox. A 27 year-old speedometer, and the sending unit, is probably very suspect, either way.

Final drive ratio did change across the MYs to provide more acceleration, particularly of the 1980 injected cars.

A number of cars did have motors replaced due to valve guide issues.

Wrong MY speedo or sender unit? Latter is cheap to change and probably easiest to check.

If you have and injected engine (maybe post a pic or the motor number, we might be able to narrow it down?) they may have dropped the engine and trans in as a package and the injected trans has a different axle ratio than the one that the car came with. That would account for 9.5% of the speedo problem

Thanks every one for your interest. Right Bullfighter slip of the finger 308gt4. Engine type on the chassis is a 106A on the engine its a 105A No. 00600. So the car has had a transplant. Is this an injected moter? 4 Webers on it now. Could any one advise what is the correct miles per hour per 1000 revs in 5th please ?

F105A is non US a QV engine. The US version is F105A 40 00600 is a low number, so it's probably an '83. It sounds like someone adapter cars and dropped it in. There is a company in Oz that makes or made the manifolds required.

    F106B is a 2v injected engine
    F106A is a 2v carb engine ( I think)
