I've been trying to locate an inexpensive donut gasket for my 308 that does not cost an arm and a leg. I'm getting about a 2.125" O.D. size on my mid section pipe ends (after the header) that I've not been able to find a donut for locally. All the shops seem to have are 2" i.d and 2.25" i.d. donuts. Will I just have to bite the bullet and get the ones from ICP, T. Rutlands & Ricambi ($13-$22 EACH).

BTW - the Fchat recommended replacement - by Napa (Felpro #8194) - is only 2.03125" i.d. (2 1/32") and does not slip on my pipe.

    Thanks for any help.

I looked into this for my 328 - my advice is to "bite the bullet". I'd also cover the new doughnut in copper grease whe you install it to try & prevent it from sticking to the pipe in case you think you might ever want to get the thing apart. They seem to "weld" themselves to the pipework.

Thanks for your reply Iain. Right now I do not need the new donuts immediately. So I'll still try to locate something as an alternative. $60-$90 for 4 simple exhaust donuts just sounds crazy when I can get four slightly larger or smaller donuts for about $10-$12 ($2.50-$3 each). I like your suggestion about the copper grease.

I think I paid the equivalent of about $55 for 4 of them recently. They really wern't much more expensive than what I was looking at trying to find a match somewhere else.

You might want to get the size in mm and check with autohausaz.com. I think there is a BMW oring type seal from one of the older 5,6 or 7 series that fits. I had a guy at a BMW independent shop match up a couple for me but they were out of a big box of spares he had so I wasn't able to get a part number or application for that matter, but they were a good fit.

    Cheers

That's strange. I recently replaced the donuts at the cat flanges with the Felpro 8194. For these connections, the Felpro ID is actually a little larger than the pipe -- not smaller. Maybe the mid-section pipe is a different size than at the cat connections? Maybe a different diameter from early cars to late? Sorry, I'm not able to offer anything constructive here. Maybe you can skim off a little material from the donut ID?

WE used some over the counter ones from White Brothers for my 328. I think they were Volvo? Ill have to ask later this week. Worked like a charm.

Yes, I've also converted the sizes to metric and get the following:

    My mid section pipe's o.d is 53mm (=/- .1mm) so I was shooting for a 70mmx55mmx16mm donut.
    In inches it's 2.093" o.d. so I was looking for a 2.75" o.d. x 2.125" i.d. x .625" thick donut.

The pipe section is a Ferrari factory part as it still has the smaller welded on plate stamped with "Ferrari" and #118157.

Although I have not physically confirmed the application, here is the BMW cross reference for a 55mm donut..18-11-1-723-539 Looks like they may be little hard to find at the discount houses as most showed not currently in stock. You might be able to find one at a BMW Dealer just beware that with their pricing matrix they may boost the price up to the same level as the ones at Superformance. (spoken as a former BMW Parts manager who charged $4 for a brake light bulb)

I went to my local exhaust shop yesterday and dropped 5$ for 2 donuts. They are exactly the size of what I removed from my GT4. I just carried the old one in and he matched it off his giant wall-o-gaskets. I *think* they came from a hook labeled 8717.

Try just walking into the shop with your parts and some cash.

I did buy the ones from Ricambi, they didn't fit, so I took the old one to the muffler shop, they matched up a set from stock. Still have the Ricambi ones, IF they'd fit yours, pay for shipping, and you can have them, they're brand new, un-used. I didn't return them because it's more trouble than it's worth. 1982 GTBi 2 cats, if that matters. Ciao

    Mike,

There seems to be a great difference between your car w/cats and my (Euro) car w/o cats as my pipes (and the whole exhaust system) are all about 54mm OD right into the muffler. That is why I've been searching for 55+mm ID donuts for my connections. I finally found some on line using the same BMW part number VIPHOTO just posted which does list them as 55mm ID. Should be coming early next week.

BTW - my can seems to have never had cats as the pipe sections have Ferrari part number plates welded to them and my non-USA OM does not show anything relating to a cat or smog system.

    Mark,

I had no luck going to some local shops with my pipe in hand. Then I saw the Pelican site when doing my search but did not order from them as the part was listed as out of stock. I went with this place:

    http://www.carpartsdiscount.com/auto/parts/96/bmw/850ci/gaskets_seals/exhaust_seal_ring.html?3593=68600

It ended up at $6.14 each with tax and shipping. I'll report back here on how well they fit, or IF they fit!

The exhaust donuts from the www.carpartsdiscount.com place fit perfect at 55mm I.D. just as I needed. The spec on them is for a 1996 BMW 850ci - OEM 18 11 1 723 539. CPD's number is 68600. $4.05 each plus tax and shipping.

That's good one! I found these from local car parts shop, as they had universal seals on stock and they fit fine.
