I am looking at a 308 with a rally spec engine done at the factory. It was a $13,000 option in 1977. -Blue printed and balanced complete engine -Competition piston and heads -Tuned carbs to rev 9,000+ rpm's!!! -300+ Horsepower Anyone ever hear of this option? thanks guys, David
Does it have a dry sump and the quick change transfer or drop gear set? If it does not have those (easy to visually confirm) I would be very dubious. I know someone who ordered and paid for one back then. It was confirmed that the factory got the order and the $$$. What the customer got in return was a stock 308 drysump and the only thing trick about it was the optional transistor ignition. It even had the lowest performance cams then made in it. Back in those days when high performance or racing parts, accessories, or modifications were ordered what you got had more to do with who you were and whether they thought you deserved them or could put them to good use than anything else. In other words if this is something you want to buy, be careful.
Bolt it to the dyno then?????? I told SlickMurphy much the same thing, look for a Michelletto invoice or something, indicating stroke with the Factory order...........
..and of course a tach with a 9K redline would be certainly unusual...........mine all say 7,800.......
SlickMurphys been burned last week on closing a deal so he may not want to say..... It's an early glass car, stock in appearance, but they are selling it based upon this 'special' engine. Claiming 300+ HP is a brave move....dyno that baby and see! Is there a red/tan glass from FL on ebay now????????
Ahh, the plot is beginning to unfold. The work on this 308 was done by Giseppe Valluchi of Road and Track Motors on Long Island in mid 1976. The work was NOT done at the factory in Italy. The car was brought from the port to the mechanic on the same day to have the engine modified. BigTex is correct, the car is a US LHD wet sump. David
Clear out your PMs WILLIAMH!!!!!!!!!! We need to help this guy!!!!! The components of the Rally Package engine were well known and it would be quite possible to purchase the 'kit' and field install. It is VERY rare, however, to pump these motors to 300+ HP and maintain any type of streetability, which is why this claim is going to raise eyebrows! That said if it doesn't dyno to that, you'd have recourse........ And I also question the 16" 5 stars in 1977. They were a later QV feature, around 1983, so that's two different things as well.
I have contacted all of the previous owners (there weren't many) of this car and here is what they said. They all agreed that the work described above was done by the gentleman described above and that the car absolutely screamed! Most of the previous owners are current owners of QV's and they claim that this particular car was blindingly fast and regret the sale. Believe it or not this car changed hands in 1988 for $71,500!! Was it the fact that it was lighter due to the glass or was there some serious massaging done to get that kind of power? One owner in particular believes that the car had 350+ hp. based on his Fcar experiences which were really substantial. Is that horsepower figure a rediculous claim or is it possible to do that and still maintain a some daily driveability? taken with a grain of salt, David
Go drive it......as I told you, glass 308s hit $115K during that period, justifying (at the time) total restoration of the cars. That was a FL car white with blue interior, I've never seen it again....... Their loss, your gain! Sounds like some good 'due diligence' to me.........
