Hi! I just want to say this site is great. I just got a 1983, 308 gtsi with 17000 miles on it. The engine is in boxes!!! Most of the parts were NOS and still in bags. And some were missing. The good news is that now I have all the parts to put it back together. The car was last on the road in 1989. I live close to Tampa FL. Does anyone know of a good shop in the area? That has reasonable prices, and dose quality work! I Just want them to build me a long block!! My wife thinks this car has been a money pit, I want to show her that it will run. If anyone is in the area and knows Ferrari engins and can lend a helping hand I would think about putting this thing back together in my shop. And in return for your time I can lend my time and shop for your next project. I have all the tools a man could want and tons of space. Please HELP!!!!!! Call Bill 484-269-0523.

I know that if I have to sell this car, I will never have the chance to own one again!! You know house, kids, dog, wife, God I hope I get this car on the road soon!!!

That sounds like a heck of a deal to me. Hope the rest of the drive train and brakes are ok too. Sounds like a fun project. Too bad I live all the way across the US. Once you get her going, all the work will be VERY worth it!

I'd buy a parts manual and start trying to figure out whats what.

Quite a jigsaw puzzle to put togethor.
Good luck. If you get stuck - posting pictures of unknown parts will probably a response or three.

Let's see... knowledge, time and money? Just kidding, sounds like the deal of the decade. Even at that price you could send the engine out to a reputable shop for assembly and be ahead. sell the sofa for some extra cash, I would check the cushions carefully, seems as though someone let this go real easy.

    good luck, Brian

I would suspect the engine was blown (broken timing belt?) and the PO tried to rebuild it, got it all apart and gave up. But $2k?? That's a silly cheap price.

Problem is, to get the whole thing together if you don't do it yourself will likely be in the price range of a complete car.

The car is black, and it was missing the cover with the oil pump in it. It came with a set of race cams and 2 valve pistons? Sold this stuff on Ebay "cams/pistons" and got 3000.00 And the lady who sold the car to me said she could care less about the dam thing. And yes she sold it to me for $2000.00 and she made me get her a leather sofa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sounds really familiar to me, Like I've read it here before... was the car (or parts) in a basement? Didn't she let it go because her husband or fiancee or something died?

Umm, that's the timing cover. I've been told that the cam drive bearing holes in the cover are bored with it mounted on the block, and the holes in the block are machined at the same time. This was the only way Ferrari could guarantee that their centerlines line up with extremely close tolerences. Thus the cover & blocks are a matched pair & another cover just won't meet spec.

I don't believe that I've ever seen this in a WSM, but I once looked up the axial alignment requirements for the bearings & can believe this. Also, if the cam belt drive shafts aren't parallel with the cam gears, the belt will want to slide to one end of the gears & will rub up against the flange until something gives.

I recommend contacting Malolm West at ferrari.uk to see if this is truly the case.

How's the paint on this car? Not that it really matters for that price. I'm just in shock and awe... and trying to figure out how good of a deal you got! :) Resprays on a 308 can be very expensive. If the paints in good condition... wow.

    Congrats!

Bill, I just looked at your profile...

You got a 308 for 2K and you've got a 914-6! Don't tell me it's a factory car... then again at this point I'm going to guess that it is.

Did anybody look into the engine that was for sale on eBay last week? It was in parts, supposedly missing only the gasket set. It made 'only' $5200....I think one of the pistons had valve marks on it though. Might have been a nice buy for Masonfamily..

I did get the title!!!! I new the guy who owned the car, and I new the other person in the car when the engine blew. She says that he was drunk and stoned and reving the snot out of the thing when it just blew the timing belt. The guy who used to own it had many many many more toys this great ferrari 308 ment nothing to him!!! He was ******. As for my PORSCHE 914-6 it is a full tub race car with 400+ hp 911 turbo motor. I love to scare the sh*t out of pca guys at the track!!!!! I hope you guys can help me I would love to drive my ferrari someday.. By the way the engine that was on ebay I lost by 100 or so. I even have a glass roof for the car!!!!!
