I have a lot less clearance between the top of my front tires and the wheel well on the passenger's side. I can't even fit my hand between the tire and the wheel well on the pass. side, but I can on the driver's side. The car has been updated with a set of 16" Momo wheels. And this may or may not be related, but the front end shakes sometimes at speeds in excess of 45 MPH

My mechanic said I probably need shocks. Is there anything else I should look at?
    Thanks

I don't think shocks will set your ride height, nor will wheel/tire diameter.

Change mechanics and find someone who can set up four wheel alignment and check for bent/worn suspension components.

Steering shudder is a worn rack.....replace or rebuild it!

    Welcome!

    I'll amend that...

The only way a shock CAN effect ride height is by siezing up after you jack the car. If you have the original Konis it's best to aviod jacking them up to full travel, as sometimes they will not compress fully once reweighted and then you have a problem!!!

I'll agree with your mechanic that shocks can cause a vibration in the driveline, but so can wheel bearings, U-joints, tierod ends, wheels out of balance, bent wheels, tires with separated belts, tires with flatspots, and so on.

Many people subscribe to the "throw money at it until it's fixed" school of automotive maintenance. Those people aren't typically going to be your everyday 308 owner, though - we're much too thrifty for that! Shocks may be the answer to all of your problems in the end, but I wouldn't open my wallet TOO far without first getting a proper diagnosis. The shocks could correct your ride height issue, but still leave you with a vibration....

Steering shudder can also just be bad rack mounting rubber bushings. A lot less $$ than a rebuilt rack.
